Academy Award nominee, Michael Shannon will play General Zod in Superman film, now titled "Man of Steel"

It feels like every Sunday there's Superman movie news.  For the most part, we knew the villain in the Superman film was going to be General Zod.  The rumor for months was that, the character would be played by Viggo Mortensen.  That rumor was proven false, by director Zack Snyder.  So today comes the official casting of the character.  It goes to Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon!  Shannon was nominated for his role in Revolutionary Road in 2008.

I like this casting choice.  Shannon has a presence that few actors do.  He demands attention on screen, and can be a commanding figure... which will be important when playing General Zod.  He can play a 'creepy', possessed characters, which again, will be perfect for the role.  His role in Revolutionary Road was terrific (one of the few things I enjoyed about the film).  He played Kate Winslet's brother, a mentally disturbed man that challenged Leonardo DiCaprio in every scene they shared together.  It was a great role for Shannon.

On another Superman note; the reboot has an official title.  It will be Man of Steel.  Much like the latest Batman installment, The Dark Knight, there's no need for the name of the character in the title of the film.  Its probably smart.  First, you separate it from the terrible Bryan Singer version, Superman Returns.  And second, the character is so universally recognized, having his name in the title is a bit overkill.  This is great news, and I'm excited about seeing a villain OTHER than Lex Luthor in a Superman film.  Your thoughts?

300 sequel will not be titled "Xerxes"... good

Probably a good idea the 300 sequel will not be titled "Xerxes".  Can you imagine what the marketing campaign would be like?  Teen boys wouldn't know how to spell it, then have mood swings about not accessing viral material, then throw tantrums, then boycott the movie.  It would be ugly.

A few weeks ago I posted about the sequel's announcement, no secret really.  But, what WAS a big deal was that Guy Ritchie may direct the film.  It's possible considering Zack Snyder, the 300 director, is going to be busy for at least 18 months on the Superman reboot.

People involved with the movie have all but confirmed that Snyder will not direct.  Too bad too.  300 is totally Snyder's vision come true.  What's interesting is that Frank Miller has finished the graphic novel to the sequel.  Remember now, 300 is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, not the exact events in history.  So with the second graphic novel done, writers will be hired to adapt a screenplay.  We'll see what happens.  All this came from an article about the film being titled something other than "Xerxes".

Crazy, Stupid, Love looks GREAT!

I love Steve Carell.  I love Emma Stone.  Huge fan of Ryan Gosling.  Huge fan of Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore as well!  And they're all in this film!  Take a look at the trailer and I'll tell you my thoughts after.

Emma Stone is all grown up, daaaang.  The great thing about the trailer is the contrast in the male characters.  Steve Carell's character seems stuck in a rut, while Ryan Gosling's character is living it up.  The banter back and forth between Gosling and Stone looks promising.

The wild card?  Julianne Moore.  I love this woman's acting!  She's so good in everything she does.  How about Kevin Bacon making an appearance?  The scene with Marisa Tomei is hilarious as well.  What are your thoughts?  I'll shut up now.

Warrior trailer... looks amazing!

This trailer look sick!  Wow!  I know I usually wait until after the trailer to comment, but I have to tell you... it's amazing!  Tom Hardy of Inception fame plays a war veteran trying to find himself after life in the military.  His brother, played by Joel Edgerton, is a teacher trying to provide for his family.  They both train and join a mixed martial arts tournament.  Check it out...

So what you think?  The movie is directed by Gavin O'Connor.  O'Connor directed one of my favorite sports films, Miracle, the Disney film based on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team.  I'll let that movie stick out in my mind, rather than the terrible, Pride and Glory, which O'Connor also directed.

Warrior looks to be a uplifting, inspirational film with plenty of heart.  Tom Hardy is quickly becoming a star in Hollywood, and rightfully so.  He has drawn a lot of attention in the last two years, and this film looks to raise his star power even more.  So, sign me up, I will pay to see this film!

The Crow reboot gets a director

Wait, this idea has been announced since October of 2009?  Yeah, that's the first time I posted about a possible reboot to the Brandon Lee starring, The Crow.  A rumored director here, a lead actor there, and badda bing, badda boom, it disappeared.

Well it's been brought back to life this week with this news... the film is set to be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who directed 28 Weeks Later.

The producers gave some insight into the setting of the film, U.S. Mexico border.  The production is set to start in the Fall of this year (I'm assuming a Summer 2012 release).  Last time I posted about the movie being rebooted, I had a great idea, and I'm going to stick by my idea.

What about rebooting the film with a female lead?  More specifically, Milla "Badass" Jovovich?  I'm telling you, the movie will be so much more intriguing if it's a female lead hellbent on revenge and retribution.  It may sound a lot like Alice from the Resident Evil franchise, but this is different.

I hope someone in Hollywood brings this up and the idea is considered.  Any takers?

Sofia Vergara might join The Three Stooges

Gloria from Modern Family?!  Yes!  Not only is Modern Family become my favorite show on television, but Sofia Vergara is one of the funniest additions to the show.  The comedic actress is not too bad looking either.

Now she's rumored to be in The Three Stooges film.  Over the past few weeks, the movie has been picking up a lot of steam.  Will Sasso has signed on to play Curly and Sean Hayes has been cast to play Larry.  Vergara would be the love interest of the three bumbling brothers.

What do you think about Vergara being cast in The Three Stooges

Sean Hayes cast as Larry in The Three Stooges

It was only a matter of time!  Last week, Will Sasso was cast as Curly from The Three Stooges.  Today the curly haired stooge, Larry, has been cast.  He will played by the hilarious Sean Hayes!

I love this choice.  I must admit, I didn't see this one coming at all, but I love it!  "Will & Grace" was one of my favorite sitcoms on the air, despite its cheesiness.  One of the main reasons I watched the show was Hayes character of Jack.

Since the show was retired/canceled, Hayes has been in a few movies.  His role in the Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman film, The Bucket List was a good one.  He is a talented actor.  But that's not the only reason this casting works for me, there's more.

Hayes' size, physically makes sense up against Sasso as Curly.  He is a bit shorter than average and has a slender body; it's going to look great if he gets to beat up on Sasso a bit in the film.

Also, Hayes is musician!  Which, guess what, so too is the character of Larry.  This is great casting by the Farrelly Brothers; for a movie that I all but lost interest in.  So, I've made it clear I love this casting.  How about you all?  Did you see someone else playing the fro haired violinist?

The Dark Knight Rises next year, what about Batman after that?

The news is out about a Justice League film is in the works, but there's more.  We're about a year away from the release of The Dark Knight Rises; Christopher Nolan's third and final film in his Batman trilogy. That hasn't stopped Warner Brothers from planning ahead.  With news of the JL movie, came news of more Batman films.

According to new president, Jeff Robinov, Warner Brothers has more Batman films to follow Nolan's version.  Robinov says that Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, will remain producers on the next set of Batman films.  Why this news scares me:  Look what happened with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.  Tim Burton remained on as producer after his two Batman films, but Joel Schumacher found a way to butcher the Dark Knight.

I guess the same thing could be said about Nolan producing Zack Snyder's Superman film; but it's still something to worry about.  Is this a way for WB to keep Nolan in-house?  He has been a cash cow for years now, and I'm sure they want a long-term relationship with the director.  But what route do they take with the next incarnation of Batman?

Do they go Batman Beyond like the animated series?  Campy like the Schumacher variety?  How about more serious, reality based films like Nolan?  The character is so versatile, so complex, there's a million ways to do it.  How about a true Batman and Robin film?  One that features the Red Hood?  That would be amazing!  And, interestingly enough, could tie into Nolan's interpretation of Ra's al Ghul.

With all this talk about the NEXT Batman franchise, do you think the CURRENT one will be neglected?  Let's hope not, because Nolan has his work cut out for him if he's planning on topping The Dark Knight.  What would you do with the next Batman franchise?

A stand alone Justice League film is in the works... for 2013?!

It feels like a case of deja vu.  A few years ago, just before the writers strike in Hollywood, we were supposed to see a Justice League film.  Now, the writers are happy, superhero films have flourished, and Warner Brothers is promising a Justice League film by 2013.

Warner Brothers owns DC Comics and is the sole distributor of all of it's films, unlike Marvel comics.  Marvel is owned by Disney.  Before superhero movies were the huge money makers they are now, Marvel licensed out its movie rights to various studios (Fox got X-Men characters, Sony has Spider-Man, etc.).  Even with various studios distributing their films, Marvel has created a film universe where all of its characters co-exist, culminating in The Avengers film.

So is Warner Brothers taking a page out of the Marvel handbook?  Nope.  They're going to make a completely separate franchise, independent of the individual characters' films.  So we will not see Christian Bale as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman in the Justice League.

I have to be honest, at first glance, this made me upset.  Maybe because I'm a fan of continuity and love to see the same actors portray the same characters in sequels and such.  But this makes a lot more sense.  Marvel shot themselves in the foot by making Iron Man 2 a prequel to The Avengers.  That movie suffered greatly because of continuity issues (and a new actor for War Machine).  So maybe it's not a bad idea after all to make it a separate franchise.

There are multiple comic books going at once, why not multiple stories in films at once.  Everyone online seems to differ on this point, but I like it.  Hopefully the same skill, patience and story telling will go into the Justice League that Christopher Nolan has put into the Batman films.  Only time will tell.  With Green Lantern coming out this summer, Superman: The Man of Steel late next year, and a Flash film in development, this may be a BETTER culmination than The Avengers.  Your thoughts?

The Hangover II trailer and poster

Check out the trailer to The Hangover. I mean The Hangover II ;)

Well, I guess we should have expected this.  I mean, how many different ways are you going to make a movie about some guys trying to figure out what happened to them the night before?  The first film easily ranks among the funniest films in history... easily!  This however feels like a repeat, with just a different person getting lost.  I hope I'm wrong, but I barely even chuckled during the trailer.  We'll have to wait and see how Alan, Phil and Stu finish their trip to Thailand.

4 minutes of Green Lantern and a new poster!

It's been a long time since the trailer for Green Lantern was released, and really very little talk has happened since.  And now this!  Four minutes worth of the movie!  This video comes via /Slashfilm.  Check out the footage and my comments...

Wow! Like wow.  Am I going out on a limb by saying this footage totally redeemed the trailer!?  I love it.  I got chills during the footage and am looking very forward to this... NOW anyway.  When the trailer was released, I was less than thrilled BUT still wanted to watch the film.  This footage has placed the movie on my must-see list.  How about you?  Can we believe star Ryan Reynolds when he says this will be an absolute space epic?
