Guess which character/actor Warner Brothers wanted as the villain in The Dark Knight Rises?

I remember back in 2008, after the release of The Dark Knight, the internet was a buzz with rumors.  About what?  Everyone was trying to guess which actors would be playing which villains in the next Batman flick.  Even I jumped into the craze by posting a rumor... Joseph Gordon Levitt as The Ridler?  I thought it was a great idea.  Apparently Warner Brothers executives agreed with me on the character, with a different actor in mind.  Batman-News.com posted a quote from co-writer of The Dark Knight Rises that will have you wondering, 'what if'?

David Goyer says, at the premier of The Dark Knight, Warner Brothers executives said, “it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio…”.  WHAT!?  Huh?  Maybe?  Yeah!  Hell yeah!  Are you kidding me?  That's even before Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan worked together on Inception.

That was 4 years ago.  A lot has happened since!  But seriously, what if?!  I think DiCaprio would have been able to go to a dark place, to do the character justice.  It would have been far different from Jim Carrey's take on the character in Batman Forever.  That was meant to be more camp, and less dark.  But in Nolan's Batman universe, The Riddler would have been pretty cool to see on screen.  I do however understand Nolan's decision to go with Bane.  He gives Batman a true challenge, both mentally and physically.  With this being Nolan's final directing effort in the franchise, we will forever wonder.... what if Leonardo DiCaprio played The Riddler in The Dark Knight Rises?
