Brave, Frankenweenie, Men in Black III & Neighborhood Watch trailers

Visually, Brave looks amazing! After all, it IS a Disney Pixar film, it's supposed to look amazing right? It's a pretty straight forward Disney plot though; the princess doesn't want to be a princess and I'm sure a love interest will pop up somewhere along the line. I'll still be among the first in line to watch this one (and hopefully forget about last year's Cars 2).

You didn't expect Tim Burton to let us down with Frankenweenie, did you? Burton returns to stop-motion animation with this upcoming Disney film. The movie feels like the perfect blend of Edward Scissor Hands and The Nightmare Before Christmas... and that's not a bad thing!

Oh boy, much better! When the first trailer for Men In Black III hit, I was nervous. In fact, I didn't like it at all. But this trailer is much much better. Will Smith is going to be funny and I'm still fascinated by the time traveling concept in the film. Plus, Josh Brolin plays a totally believable Tommy Lee Jones.

More of a teaser, but I love the concept. Neighborhood Watch stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade. Based on the trailer, you know there is going to be some great improv to go along with an outrageous premise. Can't wait!

Friends with Kids review; a heartfelt comedy about modern day families

It's amazing how times change. And one of the best things about movies is, they change with the times. A few decades ago, movie stars didn't even share a kiss on screen. Now? Well, yeah. Movies also redefine family as the times change too. In comes Friends with Kids, redefining what a family is in today's society. It's an independent film, written, directed and starring Jennifer Westfeldt. The premise is simple. Westfeldt and Adam Scott play best friends who don't have children. All of their friends have kids and they're feeling a little left out. So they decide to skip all the complications of a relationship and marriage, and have a child as friends. Let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Actors

This film is a character piece. Westfeldt turns in an amazing performance. She is a strong, yet vulnerable woman. She is independent, yet seeks the love a man. She is a great mother, but needs Adam Scott's help in raising their child. Adam Scott has perhaps the biggest character arc of the film. He stars by being a womanizer who doesn't really know what it means to love a woman. He does an amazing job portraying someone who is confused and conflicted. It's almost as though we see him deciding between what his mind, and what his heart are telling him.

Westfeldt and Scott have an amazing chemistry together. We, the audience, have no trouble believing these two characters could be best friends. The two actors play off of each other very well. No surprise, Westfeldt and Scott share the best scenes in the movie as well.

The movie is made up of a ton of great stars. The "friends" in the title are made up of: Jon Hamm (Westfeldt's real life boyfriend of 15 years, and co-producer of the film), Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns. A lot of those names look familiar? Well 4 of them stared in last years blockbuster comedy, Bridesmaids. The actors are terrific, and mostly because of the writing and their characters' story arcs.

The Writer/Director/Story

There have been plenty of movies focused on "unconventional" families. Hell, one of them even stars Madonna for God's sake. And television shows like "Modern Family" showcase the change in the word family. What sets Friends with Kids apart is it's amazing script. Westfeldt has written a wonderful, simple, relatable story for all to enjoy. The dialogue is perhaps the best part of the movie. It was believable and reminded me of the heart in another great comedy, Knocked Up. What made that movie so great was it stayed grounded in realty, as does Friends with Kids. It never felt like a sitcom, or drifted towards obsurd situations. Another thing worth noting is how rich every character is written in the film. They are all interesting, different and worth being in the film.

What I didn't like about the film:
Let's Talk

A minor complaint I have: nothing really happens. Most of the movie involves Westfeldt and Scott, or the entire group, sitting around a kitchen table talking. As I mentioned above, the dialogue is wonderful, so it's more than ok. It's also important to note, this is an independent film, and the budget may not have allowed for more than what was shot. I will say there were a few unnecessary scenes that did nothing for the overall story.

The Third Act
The script is very good; again, it was believable and relatable. However, the third act needed some tightening up. There is definitely a resolution for our characters, but it felt forced. There is a quick montage that is supposed to explain a few hook-ups and break-ups; and it needed more to get us to our climax. I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching the movie because of it, but it's worth noting.

The Verdict:
Family with a ton of heart

Needless to say, I really enjoyed this film. Westfeldt has turned in an amazing script that everyone will fall in love with. It's not going to have slapstick comedy, so don't go in expecting that. It's not going to have any physical comedy either. It reminded me a lot of Dan in Real Life in that it is a character piece that stays grounded in reality. The tone was perfect despite the pacing and run time. If you have time, I would definitely recommend checking out this great film.

First look at Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger

Talk about drama behind the scenes of a movie. The Lone Ranger project was announced by Disney over a year ago. This is of course the remake to the 1930's TV show. Almost from the beginning, Johnny Depp was attached to star and Gore Verbinski was set to direct. The two worked on the 'Pirates' movies in the past. The movie was then canceled due to a ridiculous budget. After everyone involved was willing to take a 20% pay cut, the movie was back on track.

Armie Hammer was cast as the Lone Ranger; Johnny Depp will play Tonto and William Fichtner will play the villain. Filming has begun, and this is the first official image. What do you think? I know it's not much to base the whole movie on, but it's something. I love what they did with Depp's make up and costume, and Hammer's looks good as well. Can't wait to see more from the movie.

Elle Fanning in talks to play Sleeping Beauty opposite Angelina Jolie, in Maleficent

Maleficent is having a long journey to the theater. Just to remind you, this is the live-action Sleeping Beauty remake. Angelina Jolie has signed up to play the titular character. Robert Stromberg will direct. And now, we could have our 'Beauty'. Super 8 co-star, Elle Fanning is up for the princess. Elle is of course the younger sister of Dakota Fanning.

I love this news. Unlike Lily Collins in the Snow White remake, Mirror Mirror, Fanning is a proven actress with a ton of talent. Despite how young she is, her performance in Super 8 conveyed a ton of emotion. I hope this deal is done and she's on board. This could be great. We'll let you know when it's confirmed.

Chronicle director is up for the Spider-Man spin off, Venom

A few weeks ago I got a chance to see Chronicle and loved it! Almost everything about it was great. The film was directed by Josh Trank, who at the time, was only 26 years old. The film was a critical and commercial success. It developed a lot of buzz during its run, and a loyal following. Needless to say; the success of Chronicle has opened many doors for the young director. Sony Pictures has taken notice.

Trank has began talks to direct the Spider-Man spin off, Venom. This is great news for fans of the anti-hero character. Trank could bring a vision and direction to the character that could make him more than just a B-level comic book character; similar to what Jon Faveau did for Iron Man. There is one thing I'm curious about though. With the reboot of a Spider-Man film, I wonder if they'll incorporate Trank's Venom into future sequels. Sony would be wise to take a page from the Marvel handbook of making films, and keep all the characters in the same film universe. Either way, only time will tell. Here's hoping Trank officially signs on!

Guest Review: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax

Hot on the heels of the first post comes the…second post. You can tell I’m a writer. This time the movie was easy to see because I could bring my kid. In fact I took the kid, the wife, and the mom (mine) all out to see The Lorax. Here are a couple things to note before we get started. One: I never fully judge a movie until after I have seen it. I know this is not some kind of major prophetic idea but my reasoning is that there is no universal standard for judging a movie. I try to see what the movie wants to be then see if it succeeds. I mention this because Dr. Seuss' The Lorax is not the typical animated kids movie that we have been getting lately. It doesn’t work the same way Shrek and the Toy Story films do. In short this movie is not very funny. Not unless you are high or seven. I dare not speak more, quickly to the review!

What I liked about the film:
Animation
The animation on this one is great. There were some really great scenes with bizarre Seuss-like products that will always make us smile. The design of the main town and all of the fun plastic trees were a solid part of what made the movie work.

The Writer/Story
Of course the main story was written by Dr. Seuess but the screenplay was penned by the team that brought you Despicable Me, Hop, and (this one surprised me) The Santa Clause 2. It surprised me because I am frankly amazed that anyone from the Santa Clause movies, beyond the first one, have been able to get work. Looks like the economy is really turning around, thank you oh gods of money. While the speaking parts of this movie worked fine they were not up to the standard of other recent animated works. There were little jokes here and there but not for the parents. This one was just for the kids. Not just entertainment-wise either. This flick got a little preachy. The Seuss book is a little preachy too but this movie pushes it further. The basic story of cutting down all the trees is bad and in the music of movie we hear darker messages for the kids. The Once-ler sings a song about how it’s ok to hurt the trees and then rhymes that line with “when you’re helping the economy”. Now I’m as lefty as most of the actors out there but even I felt like this went out of bounds a bit. Anyways.

The Director
Co-Directors who also worked on Despicable Me were along for this one too. In this area I thought the whole thing looked great. In fact this is where most of the jokes came from. Little sight gags to poke at this or that character and background jokes of people getting smacked by random things is always fun for kids. I just wish there had been more for the grown-ups. Grandma fell asleep ten minutes in and didn’t wake up until the credits. She leaned over and asked “What’d I miss?” I honestly told her “not much.”

The Actors
This is another area where the film stumbled. Not because the cast was bad but because we have all gotten used to the cast being full of great performances by recognizable voices. I was able to pick Ed Helms out as well as Danny Devito, but I had to IMDB the villain. Turns out it was Rob Riggle, meh. The one holdout in this category was Betty White and as per her contract with Satan no one is allowed to say anything bad about her sooooooo…

What I didn't like about the film:
The Music
While the songs and melodies were altogether ok, many of the lyrics became overly preachy and classless. The story is already full of tree hugging hippie rhetoric and then when we throw some occupy wallstreet stuff in there too it just gets over the top. This is a bummer too because the guy who did the music, John Powell, is fresh off his Oscar nom for the song from Rio. Although to be fair how much of an accomplishment is it to be nominated in a category that only had two nominees?

The Verdict:
It’s OK/CRAP
It’s just ok. But if we are being fair and comparing it to all the other great animated features being made lately then we have to call it crap. My parents would say “it’s cute” which in my mind makes it crap.

Guest review: Wanderlust

This is my first post on this site and I think it’s important that you know my qualifications for writing on a movie blog. I am what you call an indoors type of guy. While many of my friends have grown into well rounded adults that enjoy lives of working hard and having outdoor excursions with friends on the weekends I have shielded myself from such activities. As such I am almost painfully pale. I have whatever the opposite of a sunburn is. That’s how much I love watching movies.

What I liked about the film:
The Writer/Story

Wanderlust is written by David Wain, and he is awesome. If you do not yet share this belief then go watch all of his other movies or stop being stupid. The writer of “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Role Models” seems to ride the line between normal life and complete absurdity with an ease that lulls you into states of normalcy then gives you an ice cream headache of weird. It’s highly enjoyable. This story had maybe one cliché in it. It has to do with communes and married people and that’s all the ruining of the movie I’m going to do. All in all a fun but not great story that will feel familiar to many people in the pre-middle age portion of life.

The Director

Wain was also the Director but it’s harder to evaluate him here as much of the film was obviously improvised. Paul Rudd gets the best scene in the film in a blaze of improvised glory that is so good I could type out the whole thing here on the page and you would still want to go and watch him do it. Yeah, that good. So I guess I will say the direction was good in that it didn’t get in the way of the actors and their own amazing performances.

The Costars and Cameos

There is a section for actors just below this but seeing as this is a comedy the smaller roles can often steal the film. While many of the one line parts in this movie are wonderful none of them can stake a claim to stealing the film. The most impressive performances come from two comedy partners who have recently launched a great sketch show on Comedy Central. Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele. They aren’t on screen together at all during the film but they are both excellent in their own right and Peele has some amazing material that shows up in the blooper reel after the credits.

The Actors

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Anniston play the leads with Anniston once again dusting off her old Rachel schtick. She has started to remind me of Zoolander in that no matter how many different kinds of characters she plays they all look the same. “ BLUE RACHEL”. The rest of the cast will look familiar to comedy fans as it is full of great actors who have appeared in other Wain films and tv shows. The only one who was hard to spot was Joe Lo Truglio who is naked throughout the film and has a beautiful penis.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Sitcom Feeling
The movie does start to feel like a very long sitcom at some points. While it is a sitcom of the highest quality it is still a sitcom. The plot felt a little stale and by the end you can see the plot twists before the forks appear in the road but for a comedy it does a more than adequate job.

The Verdict:
I loved it

Very funny movie, and when it comes down to it I am not looking for much more than that from a comedy. Also Justin Theroux is now awesome. Check the date and time and notate that in your journals.

Chronicle review; so much more than a "superhero" film

We often see a trailer and make an assumption as to what the rest of the movie will be about. I have this conversation with my movie friends all the time; a trailer totally misses the point of a movie in hopes of selling tickets. Or, it's a good thing the trailer didn't give away everything. That's the case with Chronicle. A trailer that sold us on a "superhero" film could not be further from the truth. It is so much more, let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Writer/Story

Max Landis has turned in a wonderful script. It is a found footage film, reminiscent of Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project before it. It follows three high school students as they gain telekinetic powers. Landis crafted a character study into three very different characters, dealing with all kinds of issues. The story arc is terrific, it's cut tight and there is no fluff in the movie at all. The dialogue was believable and relatable.

The Director

This was 26 year old Josh Trank's first feature film! If you've seen the film, you'll understand how spectacular that feat is. I've mentioned that the movie is definitely a character study, but trust me, there's plenty of great action. When reviewing The Artist, I mentioned how much harder it must have been to direct a silent film, as apposed to your average movie. I think the same goes for Trank and his found footage style. As an audience, we need to believe the characters are doing most of the videotaping. So he's limited as far as the tools at hand. It sounds like he's getting a lot of attention after this movie and should have no problem getting work!

The Action

The action is great, and unique in many ways. There are simple scenes, like the friends learning how to use their powers. Something as simple as throwing a baseball with their minds. Then there are scenes of the characters flying through the sky, which look great. All of this leads to an all out battle in the streets of Seattle. Great choreography and execution here.

The Actors

Michael B. Jordan plays the popular kid that wouldn't normally be friends with the other two. He has the smallest character arc, but does a nice job bringing charisma to the role. Alex Russell plays one of the friends, an average Joe who definitely cares about his image. Russell's character is cousins with the Dane DeHaan character. DeHaan is no doubt the star of the show. He has the biggest character arc in the film. The first person footage is mostly shot by DeHaan's character. His character is abused by his alcoholic father (played by veteran Michael Kelly), his mother is dying of cancer, and he is a nobody in school. There is one scene involving a spider that summarizes DeHaan's character. He acts with his eyes alone and is fantastic. DeHaan starts to videotape everything, almost as if it's therapy. This is an important point; it more than justifies the found footage technique used throughout the film.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Budget

It's too bad innovative, creative directors don't get more support for their original ideas. There were a few scenes where Josh Trank would have benefited by a larger budget. Some of the special effects were lacking, but he did wonders with the budget he WAS provided. It's just frustrating that directors like Mark Steven Johnson and Brett Ratner get huge budgets and turn in crap like Ghost Rider and X-Men: The Last Stand respectively. Hollywood needs more directors like Trank and Christopher Nolan, who are willing to take a risk on original material like Chronicle and Inception, RESPECTIVELY.

The Verdict:
I loved it

Simply put, it was so much more than I could have asked for. The characters are rich and come about in a difficult technique of found footage material. The writer, director and actors have put together a great film that will satisfy teens and adults alike. The special effects could have used a little bit more money, but it wasn't a deal breaker. I suggest everyone goes and sees this movie, it was a great ride.

The Vow review

If you read this blog, you probably noticed I don't really enjoy chick flicks. But, I am a devoted husband and it WAS Valentine's Day. So I did the honorable thing, and sucked it up for 2 hours. The Vow stars Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams as a couple who's been married for a few years. After a horrific accident, McAdams loses her memory of the past few years, forgetting Tatum's character completely. The movie was directed by Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens). Let's begin.

What I liked about the film:
The Story

The trailer sold us all on an amazing story about a man trying to make his wife fall in love with him all over again. It's a pretty intriguing concept. We've seen other movies (50 First Dates) take a comedic approach to this. The Vow does it completely different. It takes a real life approach to these extreme circumstances. I especially liked the first act, where we learn how the two fall in love. If only the final product matched the concept.

Channing Tatum

You read that right. Tatum is phenomenal in this movie. I've always been a fan of his genre films (G.I. Joe). But Tatum can do so much more. Films like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, The Dilemma and 21 Jump Street show his range. In The Vow, he plays a character who's frustrated, even angry at the way his wife is treating him. He has to show compassion for her condition, while being totally frustrated with the way she's treating him. Great performance.

What I didn't like about the film:
Rachel McAdams

She's just not up to par in this film. Some of it has to do with the terrible writing in the film. Her character is supposed to view Tatum as a stranger, not her husband. But McAdams' character is so bad, we feel no remorse for her accident. In fact, her character is so mean, so rude to Tatum, you wonder if she's even worth the trouble. There are a few 'emotional' scenes where it feels like she's overacting. McAdams is a great actress, she just didn't have anything to work with here.

The Script

How do you sell us with an amazing trailer and give us this final product? The second and third act are almost unbearable if not for Tatum's performance. The supporting cast are unlikable, stereotypes. McAdams' parents are played by Jessica Lange and Sam Neill. Both amazing actors who had NO business being in this movie. They're so unlikable, you never feel for a moment their actions are in their daughters' best interest. And the ending? No spoiler here; but let's just say there's a lot of online chatter about how dumb, and unfulfilled it was.

The Verdict:
It's not a terrible movie, just a terribly dumb one
It's not the worst movie I've ever seen. In fact, the aspects I've listed above, I enjoyed very much. But overall, it's so weak. The execution is so poor, it's faults are hard to ignore. I would say pass on this and rent it next Valentine's Day, you wont feel so short changed that way.

The Artist review

I've read, and heard so much about The Artist, I just had to check it out. After all, the movie has been nominated for 10 Oscars! All I really knew about it walking in was, it was mostly a silent film. Oh boy is it so much more than that. Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius has crafted a movie that is so unlike anything else I've ever seen. In the last twenty years, we've seen it all on screen. We've seen dinosaurs, aliens and superheros come to life. The spectacle of if it all keeps us mesmerized. Take away the explosions. Take away the special effects. Take away the dialogue. What do you get? A beautiful film like The Artist. Let's get right into it!

What I liked about the film:
The Writer/Director

Michel Hazanavicius had such an unbelievable task. Imagine this... You have a research paper due tomorrow. You're not allowed to use the internet to do your research, or your computer to actually write it. Imagine someone taking away those tools and expecting your best work. That's basically what was expected of Hazanavicius. Telling stories is a difficult thing in and of itself. Most directors depend on dialogue between characters to carry a story. I said MOST directors, but not Hazanavicius. He wrote a beautiful script about a man's fall from grace. One tool the director did have on his side, were some amazing actors.

The Acting

Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo give remarkable performances. Dujardin plays the titular charter, the artist. He's a silent film actor who is on top of the world. His movies are the talk of the town. The artist is obsessed with fame. Bejo plays an up and coming actress who is nothing more than an extra at the beginning of the movie. As the story progresses, Bejo's character becomes an A-list actress, still fascinated by Dujardin's character.

The characters and the script are great, but it's Dujardin and Bejo who carry the film. Dujardin is especially intriguing. He starts the movie with a swagger and arrogance. That quickly fades and we see an actor evoke someone hitting rock bottom. Bejo plays a wide eyed starlet at first, and quickly becomes an arrogant actress in the film. Bejo has a wide range of emotion she must convey as well. It's such a study in acting watching these two perform. The next time a supermodel wants to turn actress; she should be required to watch this film and decide for herself if she's worthy of calling herself and actress. I'm not being sexist; same goes for those male rappers that think they can act as well.

Then there's the supporting cast. John Goodman is great as a studio executive who turns his back on Dujardin's character, for the Bejo character. James Cromwell plays Dujardin's driver and best friend. It's great to see the four main actors show such a wide range of emotion with nothing more than their facial expressions and body language.

The Story
The story is simple in premise, but grand in its delivery. We've seen a million stories about men and women hitting rock bottom. But so few portray it the way The Artist does. As the character's star power dwindles, we dwindle with him. Every frown, every tear, every sip of whiskey to help wash away the pain; we go through it with the character. Bejo's character is full of life, she brings energy to the screen. The contrast of the two is very well written. Great stuff.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Run Time
The movie is just a bit long. I must admit, I felt a little bored during the second act. There's a lot of material that didn't REALLY need to be in the movie. I consider myself a patient man, and the movie almost lost me in the second act. Small price to pay for a great story.

The Verdict:
A case study in real acting and story telling

Yes, it is a silent film. But it's so much more. The mechanics of the film probably attracted a lot of attention, but the execution is what earned it its recognition. The movie never says "HEY LOOK AT ME, I'M IN BLACK AND WHITE AND I'M A SILENT FILM". It's just another way to tell a story. The set pieces of 1920's and 30's Hollywood are beautiful. The acting is on another level, and the direction is top notch. I personally don't think it's the best film of the year, but it deserves to be mentioned. Long live silent films.

21 Jump Street review; a remake worth watching!

21 Jump Street is a movie in a long list of remakes based on 1980's television shows. The television show catapulted Johnny Depp's career, and he hasn't looked back since. That was the show, and this is the movie. It is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). It was written by Michael Bacall, based on a story by one of its stars, Jonah Hill. Hill and Channing Tatum play police officers who are sent undercover to a local high school, to take down a drug ring. Let's go!

What I liked about the film:
The Actors

This is an interesting fact; before Jonah Hill showed interest in the project, it was being remade as a drama. With Hill's work on the story, the film quickly took a comedic turn. And thankfully so. Jonah Hill is terrific in the film. There are some great scenes showcasing Hill and Tatum in high school; and Hill's insecurities come to light. He was able to portray what so many high school kids feel/felt. He's a smart young man that never really fit in to the "in crowd". I especially like the reference to all the wanna be Eminem kids that came to life in 2005.

Channing Tatum is great! He has to play the tough jock, who also has insecurities he's not comfortable with. He has the best character arc in the film and I really enjoyed his performance. Ice Cube plays a funny character who is heading up the 21 Jump Street program. Rob Riggle plays a great character who favors jocks, and not smart kids (we knew teachers like that right?). Dave Franco makes his older brother James proud. He is very funny and fully capable of keeping up with Hill and Tatum.

The Duo

I obviously enjoyed the acting, but I enjoyed the friendship even more. The movie is very fast paced. We see Hill and Tatum become friends in the first few minutes, and somehow it works. They don't waste much time developing the friendship, which I was ok with. The actors have such different, contrasting styles, it worked perfectly. The actors are so different, physically, it actually played to the comedy. I am curious to see how much of the movie was improv, because if it was, I couldn't tell. Nice job for both the main actors.

The Story

Simple, easy to follow fun. That's what other comedy remakes are not understanding. Try to be more, and you will fail. Hill and Tatum need to find a drug supplier at a high school, and to do so, they go undercover. Simple. The story lends itself to a lot of situational comedy. How teachers and coaches view the lead actors is great (I love Ellie Kemper from "The Office"). How times have changed so much in just 7 years (It's cool to be smart now?!). Minus two very obvious "shocker" moments, I really enjoyed the story behind the undercover work.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Directors

Phil Lord and Chris Miller didn't do it for me. The action sequences, albeit limited, are terrible. They are poorly choreographed, shot, lit, etc. They're not easy to watch. The two young directors came from an animation background, very similar to Brad Bird. The only difference is, Brad Bird made an amazing action film with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Granted there's a lot more to directing than creating action sequences, but the action can not be ignored.

The Verdict:
A remake worth making

There have been so many remakes, unnecessary remakes. 21 Jump Street flips the notion on its head. I love the idea of transforming the television show into a comedy film. Hill and Tatum are terrific, as are the story and script. I didn't enjoy the direction, but it wasn't enough to discourage others from watching the movie. Pay close attention and see if you can catch all the cameos from the original tv show! Check it out when it hits theaters next month.

Matthew Vaughn signs on to direct X-Men: First Class sequel

X-Men: First Class was one of my favorite films of 2011, and one of the best superhero films ever made. Vaughn's directing style elevated the film to the top of the superhero crop that was released in 2011.

There's an interesting history involving Vaughn and this franchise. Vaughn was set to take over the original X-Men franchise from Bryan Singer, when Singer left to direct Superman Returns. Vaughn did not believe in the script for X-Men: The Last Stand and did not feel he had enough time to prepare for the film. So he handed over the film to the eventual director, Brett douchebag Ratner.

I love the news that Vaughn has signed on and look forward to where he can take the franchise.

The Grey review; Liam Neeson fights wolves for two hours

Liam Neeson is one of my favorite actors in Hollywood. I enjoy most of films, minus a few outliers like last year's Unknown. Neeson stars in The Grey this week; he plays a mountain man of sorts, roughing it in Alaska. The Grey is directed by Joe Carnahan, who worked with Neeson on The A-Team. After a frightening plane crash, Neeson and 6 others must fight for survival as they march to find help. Chased by wolves for most of the movie, the men must endure to try and get back to their families. Let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Acting

Neeson is great in this movie. He plays a troubled man with an internal struggle. As the movie plays out, we discover his internal battle with religion and the struggle with his wife. Neeson can act with his eyes alone, and I found that to be the most intriguing aspect of his role. The rest of the group are played by relative unknowns, except for maybe Dermot Mulroney, who is barely recognizable. Frank Grillo plays a significant part in the film as well (I loved his work in last year's Warrior). Director Carnahan also wrote the film, which highlighted some great character development moments for these actors.

The Setting

Alaska never looked so cold. Carnahan and company put us right in the thick of things. You can feel how cold the men are, you can feel the snow on their faces. The scenery was amazing and so too the cinematography.

The Score
Simple and effective. That is the best way to describe Marc Streitenfeld's score in the film. With no extravagent action sequences to score, Streitenfeld keeps it simple. The music is nuanced and fitting of the action on the screen.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Redundancy

This is a big pet peeve of mine, and this movie beat it to a pulp. The entire film, the only 'villain' are the wolves. I've seen enough survival shows to know there's a lot more to fear than wolves in a frozen hell. Sure a few of the men battle illnesses here and there, but the overall arc is to outrun/outwit/outsmart the wolves. For two hours, they must survive the wolves. Silly and idiotic. There has to be more to it than this.

MINOR SPOILER:

I call it a minor spoiler because, if the trailer hasn't indicated to you already, characters are going to die throughout the film. The way in which the characters die is also redundant. They get eaten by wolves. Some chased down, some while they urinate, some while they fall, enough already. So stupid, it was reminiscent of the Final Destination films, except those were more creative than this.

The Character Development

I enjoyed the very few character development moments between the men. Grillo plays a tough guy named Diaz who wants nothing more than to pick a fight... but why? Eventually we find out his story and why he is the way that he is. We find out what the men think about their families back home, about religion, about life. These are the best moments, but there aren't enough of them. Having a few camp fire conversations is not enough to make us care about the characters, especially when they're being killed off one at a time. The relationship between Neeson's character and his father is explored, but only for a very short time. I would have loved to learn how Neeson got into his line of work and why.

The Verdict:
Skip this mess of a survival movie
I did not like the film at all. I know what it was trying to be. Carnahan was trying to bring back some of the magic that threw him on the scene in Narc; The Grey is definitely not at the quality level of Narc. In fact, it reminded me of b-level films that go straight to DVD. I'm sure it was on purpose, but the production value looks dirty, grimy and low budget. I enjoy Carnahan's other films, and adore Neeson, but this one was way off the mark for me. My advice, turn on the Discovery channel for two hours instead.

UPDATE: Javier Bardem will voice the villain in Despicable Me sequel

JANUARY '12: It was too good to be true. Bardem is busy filming the next Bond film, Skyfall. Most likely due to scheduling, Bardem has dropped out of Despicable Me 2. We'll see who replaces him.

Steve Carell and Despicable Me were big winners at the box office a few Summers ago. I absolutely loved the film. It was a great movie with an original idea. Ironically, my only complaint about the first film was the villain! Jason Segel voiced the villain, Vector. I didn't like Segel's voice acting or the way Vector was treated on screen.

If anyone agrees with me, they'll enjoy this news tidbit. Academy Award winner, Javier Bardem, has been cast as the villain in the sequel. He has quickly become one of the top actors in the game the last few years, and with good reason. His role as the villain in No Country For Old Men was mesmerizing. A true Bruce Almighty sequel being written for Jim Carrey

I was a huge fan of the 2003 comedy, Bruce Almighty. The film starred Jim Carrey as a man who played God, in place of the great Morgan Freeman. The movie was a huge success, it grossed over $500 million dollars worldwide. The studio obviously wanted a sequel, but Jim Carrey was a no-go. Instead, a then up-and-coming, Steve Carell stepped in for Evan Almighty. That movie was a more of a spin-off, and a huge flop that was sure to kill the franchise.

Now, Variety is reporting Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel are writing a true sequel to Bruce Almighty, and it will indeed star Jim Carrey.

I have to admit I'm really surprised by this move, if it even happens. Carrey rose to fame with movies like The Mask, Dumb & Dumber and of course, Bruce Almighty. All three of those had sequels that flopped, without Carrey. He's been a good judge of poor scripts, and not making bad sequels for the sake of making sequels. I'm curious to see how this one plays out.

Man on a Ledge review, entertaining and absurd in one

Sam Worthington was the 'it' actor a few years ago. He was hired for genre films (Terminator: Salvation, Clash of the Titans), as well as ground breaking films (Avatar). Before you know it, Worthington was phoning in performances and he quickly fell off the radar. I was so disappointed by what he could have been, and what he became. It's not too late, he's still very young and has plenty of time to redeem himself. In comes Man on a Ledge directed by Asger Leth. A man desperate to prove his innocence for a crime he did not commit, will go to extraordinary lengths to do so. With a literal title and an interesting premise, let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Premise

I'd like to be specific, the premise is terrific, the story is ridiculous. But I'll get to the story later. The premise is actually very intriguing. A former police officer, accused of a crime he did not commit, draws the attention of the entire city to prove his innocence. I really enjoy films that has the audience ask themselves, 'what would you do'? And this film made me do exactly that. Well, there's obviously a lot more involved in the finished product, but the premise was great.

The Acting

As crazy a story as it is, the actor deliver sincere performances worthy of their reputations. Sam Worthington is all in for this one. He gets to act! Imagine that, an actor gets to act in a movie. Elizabeth Banks shows her acting chops as the negotiator who must bring Worthington in from the ledge. Ed Harris plays the villain and is terrific. He may be slender in body, but he packs a mean mental punch in this movie. Jaime Bell and Genesis Rodriguez play Worthington's brother and his brother's girlfriend respectively. Kyra Sedgwick and Edward Burns are in the movie for really no reason at all. They serve the purpose of some exposition, but not much. Great cast overall.

The Editing

Without giving much away, the movie has two simultaneous stories working at once. The main plot follows Worthington on the ledge, the corresponding plot follows his brother and his brother's girlfriend. The brother is guiding a heist and required this clever editing. It was essential to the film's success. Kevin Stitt did a nice job of helping to keep the movie going. It had a great pace that was quick and effective.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Script

The premise was great, the story was absurd. In essence, the film is a thriller. But when it tries to be more, it starts to fall apart. The thriller becomes a heist; don't worry the trailer tells you so. With one ridiculous coincidence after another, the movie lost me. I love heist films, and I'm ok with one "close call". I'm even ok with one of those situations that "must happen for the rest of plan to work". But when every single aspect of the heist is a "close call", or coincidental, I'm done.

The Verdict:
Entertaining and dumb

A movie that primarily takes place in one setting, i.e. Phone Booth, is tough to execute. Likewise, a heist movie similar to the 'Oceans' films are tough to execute. So when a movie like Man on a Ledge tries to do both, it's almost setting itself up for failure. The film is fast and fun to watch. But so utterly stupid in script, that if you think about it, you'll be disappointed in the writing. I'd say wait for this on video. AtD?

SPOILER ALERT:
Why the hell have most of the movie cover the heist, if in the end there was nothing there? Some of the stupidest writing I've ever seen. And seriously, what if Worthington doesn't get into a fight with his brother at the funeral? I would think, the cops wouldn't have let him stand next to his brother in the first place. Pretty dumb stuff.

Tim Burton wants to direct Robert Downey Jr. in Warner Brothers' Pinocchio remake

Tim Burton really wants to direct Warner Brothers' upcoming Pinocchio remake. He even knows who he wants to make it with, Robert Downey Jr. Funny, I just posted about a DIFFERENT classic that was to be remade by Time Burton, Maleficent. He's obviously pulled out of that project, but sounds like he's really interested in the Pinocchio project. The Hollywood Reporter talks about it:

Neither Burton nor Downey has a deal with Warners, but sources say Burton is keen to direct the film and has begun talks with the studio, so it's just a question of whether Pinocchio will be his next movie.

Neither of these Hollywood players have signed on, but Burton has some major pull. He can get this film on the fast track, especially with Downey. Warner Brothers has Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies") working on the script. Oscar winning producer, Dan Jinks (American Beauty) is set to produce the film. Now it's a matter of time before it gets started or Burton moves on. We'll have to wait and see.

Nothing all that exciting. It's the first official photo of Jeremy Renner in the upcoming, The Bourne Legacy. Who would have thought, Jeremy Renner was the go-to guy to take over movie franchises. A little over a year ago, I wrote about Renner possibly replacing Tom Cruise in the 'Mission Impossible' franchise. In the same post, coincidentally, I was talking about the 'Bourne' franchise moving on without Matt Damon. At the time, I didn't know Renner would be taking over THAT franchise as well.

It's official of course, Renner plays a new character living in the Bourne universe. The character is Aaron Cross. The primary villain in the film, will be played by Edward Norton. Rachel Weisz will join returning actors, Albert Finney and Joan Allen to round out the cast. Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first trilogy, will director The Bourne Legacy. I'd like to see a trailer, but all the pieces look to make up a great puzzle. I'm looking forward to seeing what Gilroy, Renner and Norton can do with the franchise.

Sleeping Beauty 'remake', Maleficent finds a director.... a two-time Oscar winner

So much drama involving this film! Maleficent is a live-action film based on the evil character from the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. First we heard Tim Burton was to direct it, then he wasn't. Then maybe Harry Potter director, David Yates was set to direct. No signature yet. Then we heard Angelina Jolie would play the titular character; no signature yet either. Now a director has been hired, someone you may not have ever heard of.

Robert Stromberg is an Art Director and Special Effects Supervisor with two Oscars (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland). A Maleficent film will of course require his skill set. His resume is very impressive. But does that mean he'll be able to direct a big budget Disney film? I say yes, and a reason why.

Brad Bird came from an animation background to give us the best action movie in years with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. If Bird could successfully direct his first live-action film, why can't Stromberg? I'm looking forward to Jolie (or any actress for that matter) to sign on. Maybe we'll get a chance to see concept art for the film, to get a better sense of the look and tone. All in good time.

Matthew Vaughn may not direct Kick-Ass 2?

It's been over a year since it was reported Kick-Ass 2 was green lit. At the time it seemed like a sure thing that Matthew Vaughn would direct it as well. Now? Not so much. Jane Goldman, who co-wrote the first film, with Vaughn, says he may not return. Here is what she had to say:

I think the only thing that is fairly sure is that right now, Matthew doesn’t have any plans to direct it. He and I are not currently talking about writing it either. It may well be that Matthew oversees it in a producer role, and I may also be involved in that capacity. I know that there is somebody that Matthew has been talking to who would be interested in writing and directing that. That would be cool.

Seriously?! Damn it. Vaughn was the brains behind the first Kick-Ass and made the best Summer film in 2011 with X-Men: First Class. This is some sad news. I've been reading the comic book sequel that the film would be based on, and it's pretty good. Mark Millar has a unique writing style that fits into the film world Vaughn and company created with the first movie. We'll have to wait and see who this "somebody" is that Vaughn is talking to.

Horrible Bosses 2 is green lit

I absolutely loved Horrible Bosses! It was a funny concept that translated into a funny film, a tough task sometimes. The movie did so well, I'm not surprised by today's news... Horrible Bosses 2 has officially been green lit. It's reported Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day will all return for the sequel. Also returning is director Seth Gordon. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the writers of the first film, are writing the sequel as well.

I'm ok with the news, IF... there's a good story to be told. They can't pull a The Hangover II and make the same EXACT movie as the first, for the sake of making a sequel. I enjoyed The Hangover II, but disliked the repeat in formula. Let's hope that's not the case with Horrible Bosses 2!

Is Bradley Cooper really going to play Lex Luthor in The Man of Steel?

This was unexpected today. Bradley Cooper, who rose to fame with movies like Wedding Crashers and The Hangover films, may be in The Man of Steel. At this point, it's just internet chatter, but "the internet" seems to be pretty accurate when it comes to this kind of casting news. The Man of Steel is of course the upcoming Superman film, set to debut in the Summer of 2013.

What's interesting is, we know Lex Luthor is not the main villain in the film, General Zod is (played by Michael Shannon). So if Cooper really is cast as Lex Luthor, it will probably be a cameo setting up a sequel. I would be ok with this casting, if it's true at all. I think Bradley Cooper is a much better actor than he wants any of us to know.

He was professionally trained at The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University; more commonly known on television as "Inside The Actor's Studio". I don't think he's at the point in his career where he can pick and choose what he wants to do, but I believe he's on his way there. We'll have to wait and see if this rumor is true.

Daredevil reboot on track, first draft of the script has been turned in

Remember the 2003 Marvel superhero film, Daredevil? It starred Ben Afleck and Jennifer Gardner. Don't worry, most people don't either. I was one of the very few that enjoyed this movie. It's better than some of the other trash director Mark Steven Johnson has put out. Remember the first Ghost Rider? Or how about the God awful When in Rome? If you didn't like the 2003 film, have no fear, Fox studios is giving it a reboot.

The first draft of the script has been turned in, and the search for a director has begun. From what I'm reading online, the script is supposed to be very good. I wont hold my breath though, that's what I was 'reading online' about Green Lantern as well. This version is supposed to be "dark" (the term everyone is quick to describe their superhero movie).

The Daredevil reboot is written by Brad Caleb Kane, who has worked with Fox in the past. He was a writer on "Fringe". I'm down for a reboot, because I think the character is interesting and hasn't been totally explored in film. I wonder if anyone shares my enthusiasm for this character.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie poster and trailer

I am a huge fan of the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson masterfully took us to Middle Earth, where we began to believe in the unbelievable. Trolls, wizards and hobbits galore. The trilogy was a huge success to say the least. The three films were shot back-to-back-to-back; at the time, an unprecedented move. The author of the books in which the movies were based on is J.R R. Tolkien. Tolkein also wrote The Hobbit, a prequel to the three books that made him famous. Ironically, The Hobbit is sub-titled "An Unexpected Journey". And what an unexpected journey it has been for this film.

First Peter Jackson was in, then out. Then there were lawsuits between Jackson and the studio. Then there was a workers strike in New Zealand where the film was set to be shot. Then Jackson agrees to produce, rather than direct. Then Guillermo Del Toro was to take over the franchise, then HE drops out. And what do you know? Jackson is back in the directors chair. The book has been split into two films, which will film back-to-back, much like the original trilogy. Check out the trailer below and my thoughts after.

I love it!, I loved the original trilogy, so this is a bit biased on my part. What I enjoy the most about Jackson returning?... the continuity in tone. The original films had a tone that was unlike any other action/adventure/drama. With just a few seconds of film, you could tell it was one of the three films. Jackson has managed to bring back that same tone to the prequel. The score is going to be epic I'm sure. And what about the creepy shot of Gollum? That character alone should be worth watching the film. I'm pumped about the first trailer, how about you? Let me know via Twitter.

Alan Taylor, officially accepts offer to direct Thor 2

It's been a crazy roller coaster finding a director for Thor 2. First Kenneth Branagh decides not to return to the franchise after he did an exceptional job on Thor. Then Patty Jenkins, director of Monster, signs on for the sequel. Then she drops out due to whatever reason Marvel would have us believe. And the search was on. Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan were both considered, with Taylor ultimately getting the job.

Both candidates have directed a lot of television. Coincidently, they've both directed episodes of the critically acclaimed "Games of Thrones" on HBO. Taylor has quite a bit more experience. I'm pretty happy with this selection. Taylor's resume is impressive, and extensive.

I don't mean to take away from Taylor's qualifications, but really, the movie is going to make a lot of money regardless of who directs. That doesn't mean we should be ok with anything Taylor shoots, it's simply stating a fact. Even the WORST of superhero movies (Green Lantern) make money. Let's hope Taylor lives up to the quality of film Branagh has given us.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows review, better than the first!

When Sherlock Holmes was released in December of 2009, I fell in love with it. Director Guy Ritchie, and Robert Downey Jr. gave the legendary character a fresh, new spin. He was an ass kicking genius. Jude Law played a terrific Watson, also re-imagined as a veteran soldier. Here we are two years later and the stakes are higher, much higher. The movie is Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The legendary villain, Professor James Moriarty is featured. Let's begin.

What I liked about the film:
The Story

The first Sherlock Holmes was a delight. The story was simple, easy to follow, but had its share of twists and turns. What I liked most about that movie, was the way Guy Ritchie gave the audience the clues as the story developed, but it took Holmes to figure it all out. The second film features an even better story. The basic premise is nothing new; the villain tries to start a war so he can profit from the goods necessary to fight the war for both sides. This was pretty much the story of X-Men: First Class. What makes it so much more intriguing in this film is the way Moriarty's plan unfolds. I wont say anything else. Check it out!

The Acting

Roberty Downey Jr. is so witty, smart, charming, you can't help but like him. Holmes' mind works differently than the rest of us; and Ritchies imaginative style portrays that thought process perfectly. Jude Law holds his own when he's with Downey. They have an undeniable chemistry. The characters themselves need each other more than either is willing to admit, and the actors portrayed that perfectly. New comer Noomi Rapace plays a gypsy woman who is essential to the story. She has little to do in the way of acting; but does a fine job nonetheless.

The Villain

The stakes are much higher when Professor Moriarty comes out from the shadows. Jared Harris plays the character perfectly! He is the yin to Holmes' yang. Yet they are equal in so many ways. They're smart, analytical and both men can fight. Harris plays the villain so well, we hate him by the end of the movie. We hate him because he's a true threat to our hero. He really is the Joker to Holmes' Batman. Loved this character.

The Action/Direction

Remember this scene: running through the forest. I say this all the time: 'I want action movies to show me something I've never seen before'. Guy Ritchie and company did just that. The action is bigger and better than the first. It's choreographed beautifully, and executed with precision. Minus a silly chase towards the beginning of the film, the action is top notch.

The Music

Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite composers today. He's given us memorable score after memorable score. The 'Pirates' films, Christopher Nolan's 'Batman' films, The Lion King, and, and, and. You get it. Zimmer's score is reminiscent of the times in the film, but are fresh and exciting. I felt like, as crazy as the action got on screen, the score kept it grounded. Loved this soundtrack, looking forward to picking it up.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Set Up

I don't want to spoil anything so I will be careful. I also don't want to talk about plot too much. But anyone who knows how profitable these films have been knows, there will be sequels. The Verdict:
Bigger and better than the first

This movie is not going to get the same attention as a superhero film, but it should. It's bigger and better than the first. It has a tight script, a better villain (sorry Mark Strong), and amazing action sequences. Guy Ritchie has created a franchise for this generation to appreciate the literature this character was adapted from. Robert Downey Jr. is his terrific self, as are Jude Law and Jared Harris. I love the addition of Noomi Rapace, even with the little she had to do. Great music and direction round out the kudos. I very much enjoyed this film.

The Adventures of TinTin review, a spectacle from two cinematic geniuses

I never read the TinTin comic strip. I've always known who the character was, and what he looked like, but nothing else really. So when I went to see this film, it was all new to me. The movie is The Adventures of TinTin. It is directed by one of the greatest story tellers in cinematic history, Steven Spielberg; and produced by another great, Peter Jackson. It features the voice talents of Jaime Bell, Andy Serkis and Daniel Craig. Let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Visuals

Holy mother of wow. The movie is absolutely gorgeous. I watched it in 3D (the theater I went to did not have the 2D version). It is among the best looking animated film I've ever seen. The characters in the film look so real, some scenes had me asking myself, "how did they do that?". This doesn't surprise me in the least. Peter Jackson is a special effects genius and knows how to bring the goods. Nicely done.

The Scope

This goes in conjunction with the visuals. The settings in the movie are breath taking. The detail, color and size of all the various locations, is something that requires a second viewing to fully appreciate. The oceans, the Sahara desert, the dam; if you've seen the film, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Beautiful.

The Score
John Williams is the best in the game. He's worked with Speilberg in the past, and they re-teamed for 'TinTin'. The score is invigorating and matches the excitement on screen. What I love about Williams' score the most: it doesn't take over the movie! There are animated films, or action films in general, where the score takes over the scene. Another thing, you can just tell when you hear a Williams score, please don't ask me to explain.

The Action

There is a scene in the film that is easily one of the best in animation history. It's actually been talked about a lot online. It's a great example of the action in the film; it's the chase sequence through a crowded city on a motorcycle, in one continuous shot! Granted it's animation and one continuous shot is not as impressive as live-action; but it still requires very detailed planning and execution.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Story

For such a big, spectacular film, the story is weak. Yes, there are pirates and amazing settings, like I mentioned earlier. But the villain, Rackham, who is voiced by Daniel Craig, is exposed early in the film. Fine, that's not a big deal. And obviously the movie is a treasure hunt, the trailer tells us so. But Rackham's motivation is a family feud started generations earlier? Seriously? He's not really interested in the treasure? It doesn't work at all. And please don't worry, this is not a spoiler, it is revealed pretty early in the film.

At times, it felt like the action was for no reason. I mentioned earlier I loved the action, but if it's not serving a purpose, or adding anything to the story, why? There is a specific scene that really annoyed me. I wont divulge too much, but look for the scene involving two cranes. The definition of over-the-top and unnecessary.

Nothing at Risk

There's nothing really at risk in the film. There's no diabolical scheme that will affect the world, or so much as a small city. There's no weight to the characters at all. The closest we get to emotion in the film involves Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) trying to quit drinking. I was really disappointed in this aspect of the film. Peter Jackson got us to believe a billion pound ape was sensitive, we could have seen more of that magic here.

The Verdict
A beautiful spectacle with very little substance

The movie was a good one. It was a well crafted animated film. But it doesn't pack the emotional punch that Pixar has mastered in this genre. Everyone involved, especially Speilberg, Jackson, Bell, Serkis and Craig, should be proud of the outcome. But there was just a little more flash, and a little less heart than I would have liked to see out of this Dream Team of film makers.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol review, the best of the franchise!

The Mission: Impossible franchise has been huge for Tom Cruise, who plays international spy, Ethan Hunt. These movies have had some of the best directors in the game. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is directed by Brad Bird. Bird made his name at Pixar in animation, and this is his first trip to live-action. And what a trip it is, let's begin!

What I liked about the film:
The Team (Actors)

Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise. Hate him or love him, the man can act. When emotion is needed, he's there. He brought a humanity to the role that helps the audience care about his character, and not just view him as a droid. Simon Pegg is back, and out of the office in this film. He's definitely steals every scene he's in and has some of the best lines in the film. Paula Patton is stunning when she needs to be, and kick-ass as well. She did a great job. Jeremy Renner is the newest addition, and is rumored to be taking over the franchise after 'Ghost Protocol'. His character is a mysterious one, and Renner has to gain the audience's trust, while keeping us confused. Josh Holloway has a small, but terrific role in the film! Fans of the series, "Lost" will appreciate his role. The chemistry between the actors is evident and really helps us believe they are a team.

The Story/ Heist

The story in this film is the best of the series. The characters are working without the support of their agency, IMF. They're hiding in the shadows, using make-shift equipment and laying low. The movie takes us all over the world, but each location serves a purpose in the plan to save the world. It felt a bit creepy because I got a sense of "this could really happen", and I knew I was watching a big-budget spy film. Pay close attention to the hotel heist, which is actually two heists in one! The way it plays out is spectacular.

The Action

The trailer showcases the unbelievable sequence at the Burj hotel in Dubai, with Cruise dangling on the side of the building. I watched the film on a regular screen, not IMAX, and became dizzy of the sheer scope of the sequence. It's terrific. That's just one of several sequences in the film. Wait until you see the chase in a sand storm. The heists in the film are perfectly orchestrated. And what I really appreciated was, every character was an essential part of the plan. The sequences are easy to follow and very entertaining.

The Director

If anyone, EVER doubted Brad Bird, they should all be apologizing right now. I was really excited when Bird was announced as director. Granted he came from animation, but his movies have been amazing. His direction is the best of the MI franchise. No disrespect to the past greats who have directed these films (Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams); but Bird takes the cake. What's interesting is, the series has had four different directors with four very different styles. Everything from sleek and stylish slow-mo, to fast paced, high intensity action. Bird's choices are spot on; everything from sets, costume, score, editing, pacing, are terrific. I hope this opens the major studio's eyes as to what animation directors are capable of. Nicely done.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Villain

This is something I complain about a lot; we need a real villain to justify all this action! The main villain in 'Ghost Protocol' is barely in the movie. He's played by Michael Nyqvist. Except for a news story, and a fight towards the end, the villain is never there. Granted his plan is diabolical, but we need to see him more to feel the pressure the characters do. The script is very good, but I believe the villain was never fleshed out.

The Verdict:
The best of the franchise by far

These movies have all been well done, but 'Ghost Protocol' is the best so far. I doubt this is the last we've seen of Tom Cruise playing Ethan Hunt. The movie is doing big numbers and Renner, as great as he is, is no Tom Cruise. Cruise has international appeal that Renner just doesn't have yet. So I'm sure if the script is well written, Cruise will be back. The actors, the script, the direction are all top notch. Check it out this weekend and let us know what you think!

The Dark Knight Rises official trailer, screenshot breakdown

The poster was revealed just a few days ago. And now, the world gets a glimpse into the next Batman film; The Dark Knight Rises. Very few movies get the kind of buzz this movie receiving. Is it well deserved? Over-hyped? Check out the trailer below and my thoughts after.

I had to watch it four or five times in a row before I calmed down, feel free to do the same if need be. I am thoroughly impressed with the trailer. It gives us plenty to salivate over, but still keeps the entire story a mystery. Director Christopher Nolan is a genius at doing that. The trailers to his films never give anything away, but still keep us wanting more. There are a few screen shots I'd like to go over very quickly.

The Robin references

Check out the top of three pictures. See the extras holding up the sign to the fictional Gotham City Rogue? Notice the "R" in the word Rogue? It looks awfully similar to the "R" used in the solo comic book, "Robin". I think it's pretty safe to assume that the character Robin will not be in the film; both Nolan and star Christian Bale have debunked that rumor. But check out the second tidbit.

NFL wide receiver, Hines Ward, plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers in real life. He and other Steeler players were recruited for these football scenes you see in the trailer. What's VERY interesting is the player's last name. Actor Burt Ward, played the character Robin in the 1960's "Batman" TV series. Pretty cool huh?

The man holding the cane?

Is that Bruce Wayne? And if it is, does that mean the villain, Bane, breaks the back of Batman, as he did in the comics? My guess is that it is Bruce Wayne. There is another shot of Bane standing over an obviously hurt Bruce Wayne, where he delivers his only line of the trailer. Broken back?

Mongolian Prison?

Remember all the way back to Batman Begins, when Bruce Wayne is in a Mongolian prison? Check out the shots to the left. Christian Bale is sporting the same beard and longer hair he did in 'Begins'. I don't know much about Bane as far as the comic are concerned, but what I do know is, he was raised in a prison. The country in the comics is different, but this could fit nicely into the Nolan trilogy. What if Bruce Wayne and Bane had an altercation in prision, and Bane is holding a grudge? Awesome!

The TumblerS

Did you notice all the Tumblers in the trailer? How about the incredible looking Batwing? It looks like the Tumblers, which was designed by Wayne Enterprises, have been called into action to accompany the Gotham PD. What's even more interesting is, in the shot below, there are two of them riding alongside Batman in the Batwing. Is that Commissioner Gordon and the Joseph Gordan-Levitt character, John Blake? Or maybe it's Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman. And I love what Nolan has done with the Batwing. It appears to be more of a hovercraft than a plane, like it has been depicted in past films. This helps to keep the movie grounded in reality. The Tim Burton Batwing flew threw the air and up to the moon; which looked great, but makes no practical sense whatsoever. I like the Batwing a lot more than I did the Batpod.

I know I don't usually write this much about a trailer, but I had to. It's too exciting not to. I am a huge fan of the films, and the character. I don't have a doubt in my mind, Christopher Nolan will deliver an epic conclusion to this amazing trilogy. I can't wait until July 20th of 2012 arrives!

Animated, Justice League: Doom, officially announced

The crew over at DC and Warner Brothers Home Video have been really spoiling us. I have been really happy with their straight-to-video animated films. They're usually PG-13, and offer up stories with a little darker tone than you'd expect out of an animated film. The last film was Batman: Year One, and it was spectacular. It mirrored the look and tone of it's comic predecessor to a t. DC just announced their next film; Justice League: Doom. You'll have to wait until February 28th, 2012 to get it; but you can check out the trailer below for a sneak peak. Enjoy.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer; explains why half the original cast is no more

I know everyone hated it, but I really enjoyed G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. It was a fun Summer movie with a ton of action and very little character development. It was announced the director of that film, Stephen Summers, would not direct the sequel; instead, the director of Step Up 3D would, Jon Chu. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) joins the cast, as well as Bruce Willis. A lot of the original cast is gone, the trailer will explain most likely why. Below is the trailer to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. It looks pretty good. I think the special effects are solid, the story makes sense (especially if many of the original 'Joes' have been murdered). I think the movie will do well. The Rock has proven to be a great action hero, and Bruce Willis is a legend. Let's hope the movie looks as good as the trailer!

Men in Black 3 trailer; time travel in full effect

Guess who's back? Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black 3. The franchise has been on hiatus for years, but promises to come back in 3D next year. There was a lot of drama shooting the film. A scheduled break in the production was the cause of a lot of rumors; rumors that the script wasn't very good, that it was actually being written as the crew was shooting, etc. Check out the trailer below and my thoughts after.

Not sure if I like it. Actually, I'm sure I don't like it. It's just a trailer, I understand. But I would have featured a lot more of the time travel aspect of the film because that's the plot is focused on. I like the idea of Josh Brolin playing a young Tommy Lee Jones, but we'll see how that panes out. I loved the first MIB, but the sequel was abysmal at best. Let's hope the rumors are false and the script is solid. Otherwise, Men in Black 3 will just be yet another terribly part 3 in the history of cinema.

The Descendants review; a great story that has us ask, "What would we do?"

The Descendants is getting a lot of attention before awards season; especially it's star, George Clooney. It also has a 90% 'Fresh' rating on RottenTomatoes.com. The film follows a man with A LOT going on in his life. A decision that will affect everyone in his extended family is solely on his shoulders, his 17 year old daughter is an alcoholic troublemaker, his 10 year old daughter has an unusual sense of humor, his father-in-law hates him. Oh and did I mention his wife is in a comma after a boating accident; it's not until she's in the coma does Clooney's character realize she was having an affair with another man. Whoa; that's a lot going on. Let's get started!

What I liked about the film:
The Acting
I love awards season because all the big dogs come out and play. The Summer obviously gave us all the big blockbusters, and now we get to see acting at its best. Clooney turns in an amazing performance. The full range of his acting is put on display in this film. The character has moments where he's furious with his wife in a comma. Clooney wants to explode on her, but obviously can't. We feel sorry for him, sympathetic. The anger subsides and Clooney has to feel sorrow, sadness and regret for the way his marriage limped along. Brilliant.

The supporting cast was terrific as well. Shailene Woodley plays Clooney's teenage daughter. Just after Clooney, she has the most difficult role in the film. She is the one that has to break the news to her father that her mother was having an affair. Her character arc is the best in the film. When introduced to the audience, she is a drunken, disrespectful, troubled teen. By the end of the family's journey, she has a new perspective on things. I really enjoyed every scene she was in. Nicely done.

The Story
I don't usually discuss plots during my reviews, but I'll share a little here. There is obviously a lot going on during the 2 hour film, but there is one main story line. The family is on a mission to find the man Clooney's wife was cheating with. They want to tell him she's in a comma, and offer to let him see her. There were so many times during the movie I asked myself, "What would I do?" I wonder if I could handle the news of my wife cheating as well as Clooney's character did. There is a tense moment when the family could ruin the man's life, but they take the highroad and don't. The sub-plot (which is where the title comes from) is great. Family, money, greed, conscience, responsibility, community, all of those things are explored and questioned. Loved the story!

Hawaii

The setting is a character in the film. We all know it's beautiful and is a hot travel location. It was nice to see an entire story unfold on Hawaii. Usually movies use Hawaii as a vacation spot to take the characters. Well, Hawaii itself is a character and a major part of the plot. I loved the subtle history lessons that applied to the descendants. And it doesn't hurt that Hawaii is a gorgeous state.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Run Time
The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the run time, it's just simply too long. There were a couple of scenes that could have been cut and the movie would have been just as effective. With run time, comes slow pacing. I would have liked to have seen the story move along a little bit faster than it did. But I understand the need to slow things down and develop every character in the movie.

The verdict:
A great story with terrific acting

Movies are nothing more than stories being told through film. This was a very interesting, very moving story. Life is full of surprises, some good and some bad. We have great things happen to us, and terrible things as well. The movie shows these characters go through a life changing experience with the mom in a comma. Even if the audience has never dealt with a family member in a comma, we can still relate. We can relate with happiness, anger, sadness, because these are feelings we all go through. Kudos to writer/director Alexander Payne. His resume includes films like About Schmidt and Sideways. He knows how to write and direct moves an audience can relate to, and I thank him for that!

The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster is amazing

I'm bias, but who cares? This poster is just spectacular. The Dark Knight Rises doesn't come out for another 7 months, and it is the most anticipated film of 2012. The poster features Batman's cowl, half broken in the rain as Bane walks away from it. The movie is of course directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Tom Hardy as Bane, and Christian Bale as The Dark Knight himself. Thanks to Slashfilm for the poster.

Battleship, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted & The Three Stooges trailers; oh dear God, they're bad

I don't even want to say anything. Just check out the posters and trailers and read my thoughts at the end of the post. Wow.

Transformers, oh I mean Battleship looks like a Michael Bay fest in which there will be no character development and one explosion after the other. Oh man, where do I start? It's so special effects heavy I don't know if there will be a lot of dialogue, much less character development. It's a pointless adaptation of a board game folks! Come on! Madagascar 3: America's Least Wanted sequel. It's actually titled Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. Didn't Dreamworks learn anything from Disney Pixar's Cars 2? The whole international spy thing doesn't work! I hated Cars 2, it was just a god awful display of story telling. Madagascar 2 wasn't very good to begin with; other than money, there is no reason for this sequel. But as long as mommy's and daddy's keep taking their kids, the studio will keep making them.

Oh boy; oh man; oh brother. What else is there to say about The Three Stooges remake? I was actually looking forward to this remake. It might be because I grew up watching the original shorts. I did NOT expect to see a trailer like this. It's terrible. The acting, the physical comedy, the ridiculous jokes. I don't want to give this movie any more of my time than the last paragraph. Too bad, too bad Farrelly Brothers, I expected more.

Patty Jenkins pulling out of Thor 2; who takes it over now?

"Creative differences". I always wonder what that really means when someone quits, or is fired from a film. Patty Jenkins is quitting Thor 2, the sequel to the hugely successful superhero film from 2011. She and Marvel had "creative differences" and she's out. I'm sure it will take months, if not years, before we find out why she really quit. But for now, who should take over? The studio is looking at Alan Taylor, who has directed a lot of TV series. Everything from "Lost" to "The Sopranos", "Game of Thrones" and "Mad Men". That would be an interesting choice; he could easily handle the dramatic aspect of the character.

The studio is also looking at Daniel Minahan, another TV director. Minahan has directed "Six Feet Under", "Deadwood", "True Blood", and coincidentally, "Game of Thrones". I see what Marvel is attempting here. They're stingy bastards and want someone cheaper who will do whatever they want.

This supports my theory that Kenneth Branagh didn't agree to a sequel because he wasn't going to be Marvel's errand boy. Maybe I'm just getting away from the point here. But this same thing keeps happening as far as talent quitting Marvel films; and it can't always be a coincidence! i.e. Jon Favreau off Iron Man 3; Edward Norton off The Avengers; Kenneth Branagh, and now Jenkins off Thor 2. Some of these examples could have been personal decisions and difficult talent (Norton). But seriously? The studio has already gained the reputation of a stingy bunch of people that want to oversee everything! I remember thinking once; maybe it's a good thing they're like this? All of their movies do well, so I guess one could argue: if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Benicio Del Torro is not playing Khan in Star Trek sequel, he's not playing anyone at all

I just posted a few days ago that Alice Eve and Benicio Del Toro were cast in the J.J. Abrams sequel, Star Trek 2. There was all this hype that he may play Khan, a popular villain in the Star Trek world. Abrams denied it. Well now it looks like Del Toro is dropping out completely, and the nerd are running wild with this. A lot of posts online are suggesting that Khan will be in the movie, just not played by Del Toro. We'll have to wait and see what happens. For now, let's just be thankful Alice Eve is still in the movie.

New poster for The Amazing Spider-man is clever

SuperHeroHype got their hands on the latest poster for The Amazing Spider-Man. It's pretty clever how they incorporated the spider into Andrew Garfield's shadow. I haven't really been posting much about this movie because, well, there isn't much to say. The cast and crew are taking care of re-shoots this month, and the movie should wrap after. Below is a killer concept art for the primary villain, The Lizard; who is being played by Rhys Ifans. I'm loving the concept art and the tone of the movie, based on the first teaser trailer (which you can check out below). I am walking into this with low expectations and hope to be surprised. I have faith that everyone involved will make it different from the Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire films. So what do you think of the poster, concept art and older trailer?

This Means War poster and international trailer; Tom Hardy and Chris Pine are spy vs. spy for Reese Witherspoon

I remember those crazy spy vs. spy comic strips, don't you? Well this is taking that concept to a whole other level. Tom Hardy and Chris Pine play secret agents vying for Reese Witherspoon's love. When they both find out they're dating her at the same time, craziness ensues. The two try to sabotage each other. Check out the trailer for This Means War below and my thoughts after.

This...looks...great! I love the tone, and the mix of action and comedy. Reese Witherspoon has never looked better. Hardy and Pine are believable friends; and that is important. If there's no onscreen chemistry with the three leads, I'm sure the movie fails. I will most definitely be seeing this! How about you?

First unofficial photo of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln

It's been over a year since I posted about Daniel Day-Lewis replacing Liam Neeson as Abraham Lincoln in the aptly titled film, Lincoln. The movie has been an on-again, off-again project in Hollywood; but it is most definitely on. The film is to be directed by Steven Spielberg, and should start filming soon.

We know Day-Lewis is an incredible actor who immerses himself in his roles. He basically becomes the characters. I have no doubt he will kill it as the United States' 16th president. I still don't know much about the film, as far as what it will be about. Will it be a full biopic? Focus on Lincoln's presidency? Slavery? Just his last year? We'll have to wait and see. All I can say is this: I wish I took any job I've ever had as seriously as Day-Lewis does acting.

I guess Snow White and the Huntsmen may have started a new trend: retelling of children's stories. Entertainment Weekly has the first official photo of Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Whoa, I guess it's not the story we heard as kids is it?

I am a fan of both actors, but will reserve judgement until I see at least a trailer. I'm really pumped about 'Huntsmen'. I feel like it's a fresh and very different take on the classic, unlike Mirror, Mirror. This photo doesn't give away much, but I think 'Witch Hunters' is going to have a darker tone than I thought. Which is fine by me. Let's just hope the retelling of these classic stories equals good films.

I don't really need to explain right? I love Batman. I love everything about the character. I became of the character in the 90's with the Bruce Timm cartoon, "Batman: The Animated Series". I was just a kid when that show was airing on TV. As an adult, Christopher Nolan made me love the character even more with his realistic interpretation of the character and the world he lives in. Batman Begins was huge, The Dark Knight was epic and The Dark Knight Rises looks to top them all. This fan made poster was created by Jamie Brown, an incredible artist. It has an Indiana Jones look and feel to it, as far as the posters that is. Pretty incredible huh?

Alice Eve cast in Star Trek 2 and Benicio Del Torro is NOT playing Khan

Except for Cloverfield, I'm a huge fan of J.J. Abrams' work. I recently saw Super 8 and absolutely loved it. I feel like Abrams' love letter to movie making was better than Scorsese's in Hugo. Anywho, he rebooted Star Trek a few years ago in grand fashion. The perfect mix of action, comedy, drama and winks to the fanboys. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and look forward to the sequel. Well this week brings casting news about that sequel.

The beautiful, the lovely, the gorgeous, the charming.... OK I have a little crush on this actress, don't tell my wife. Alice Eve has been cast in a major role for the sequel. Earlier this year she was supposed to play Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class. Ultimately Eve dropped out and we got the worst aspect of the film instead, January Jones. Hopefully that wont be the case with a Star Trek sequel. No specifics on who she will play, but I like it! She doesn't do too many films, but I find her a delight in a lot of what she does. I loved her in She's Out Of My League and her story arc on HBO's "Entourage". Interested in who/what she'll play in the film.

Another casting rumor has been laid to rest in relation to this sequel. We already knew Benicio Del Toro was cast in the film; but his character had not yet been announced. The rumor mills ran wild this week with most of the internet chatter claiming Del Toro was set to play Khan. For those (like me) who are not huge Trekkers; Khan is a primary villain in the Star Trek mythos and also the film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. With Abrams' version being a reboot, it wasn't too far fetched to expect this villain would pop up eventually. But now, Abrams says, Del Toro will NOT be playing Khan.

Christian Bale drops out of Darren Aronofsky's Noah, Michael Fassbender in?

I haven't really been following the progress of Darren Aronofsky's next film project, Noah; but it's a re-telling of Noah's Ark. There's a reason for that... I did not like Black Swan at all. Contrary to a lot of people's opinions I'm sure. If you want to read why, check out my review. But back to Noah.

There was a lot of talk that Christian Bale would be playing the titular character, and he has since dropped out. Bale is a hot commodity in Hollywood right now; so I'm not completely surprised he had a scheduling conflict. After his Oscar for The Fighter, there's a long list of projects in his future.

As the internet tends to do; it went nuts with new rumors that may or may not be true. The latest is that Michael Fassbender is taking over the role.

2011 has quickly become the year of Fassbender, and I'm ok with that! After Jane Eyre, X-Men: First Class, A Dangerous Method, Shame and Haywire, I'd say he's had a good year! So maybe this rumor isn't true, but I hope it is. I've been saying all year; hopefully Fassbender doesn't take the Sam Worthington route to obscurity. Worthington was the "it" guy a few years go. But he consistently turns in stale performances with little to no emotion. With the recognition Fassbender is receiving for Shame, I doubt that will happen to him. Here's hoping it wont!

Hugo review; I definitely agree to disagree with the majority on this one

We all know that Martin Scorsese is a genius behind the camera. I have been a fan of his work, literally, my whole life. I remember being "too young" to watch Goodfellas, but sneaking into the living room to watch it anyway. I was rooting for him to get his first Oscar a few years ago for The Departed, and he did just that. Now we can, fittingly, call him Academy Award winner, Martin Scorsese. The gangster genre made him famous, but I never hesitated to think he couldn't handle a family film. I was so confident in Mr. Scorsese I even watched it in 3D.

Hugo is a film about an orphan boy, played by Asa Butterfield, living in a train station in France. He meets a toy maker Georges (Ben Kingsley) and his God daughter Isabelle (Chloë Grace Moretz). An adventure ensues between Hugo and his young friend; all the while avoiding the train station manager (Sacha Baron Cohen) who threatens to toss back in the orphanage. Hugo is the film, this is the review, let's go.

What I liked about the film:

Movies

I could not imagine my life without film. There have been tough times in my life where the movies were my escape. I have always been one to 'get lost' in the story. This movie is so obviously Scorsese's love letter to cinema. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll be subtle. Hugo is a huge fan of the movies. He takes Isabelle to the movies for the first time, and she falls in love as well. As Hugo's adventure unfolds, Hugo and Isabelle discover there is a lot more to her God father than she thought. I'll leave the rest up to you to discover, but I loved the characters' passion for the cinema.

The 3D

I have been very vocal on this blog about my hatred for 3D. Movies like Avatar made me excited about the potential for the medium. While movies like Tron: Legacy just simply made me mad at the gouging from the theater for the higher ticket prices. Hugo lives in a train station clock tower; and the brilliant 3D captured it perfectly. It places the audience in the tower with the other characters. The camera follows the young boy through gears and belts and obstacles along the way as he winds up the clocks in the tower. The 3D makes you feel the depth of the setting the characters are in. It's never over the top, which was a pleasant and welcome surprise.

What I didn't like about the film:

The Story

Ok, so there was very little I enjoyed about the film; wow, that was even harder to type than I thought it would be. To me, the story was very weak. The movie couldn't decide what story it wanted to tell to be completely honest. Is it the story of Hugo and his father? Hugo the orphan, fighting to survive? Hugo and Isabelle's story? Hugo and Georges? Arg. In every 10-15 minute increment, it changes. It's hard to describe this without giving anything away, so I'll leave you with this; I didn't like the story at all.

The Characters

Georges is a very intriguing character; but other than Sir Kingsley's performance, the rest was not up to par. The child actors give decent enough performances, but their characters are never fully realized. Butterfield has a few moments where he's about to show off his acting chops, but it's not enough. And wow, Sacha Baron Cohen is asked to perform a slapstick shtick in a film that didn't match that tone. The slapstick felt forced and as if it didn't belong in this movie.

The Pacing

The first act is abysmal. It is unbelievably slow. When it starts to pick up, and we see Hugo and Georges work together, it suddenly and abruptly shifts its attention elsewhere. The run time is 2 hours and 6 minutes (which is short by Scorsese standards), but it felt like a 3 hour bore. I understand it is an adaptation, but I would have tightened the script and sped things up for the audience.

Family Film? What Family Film?

This is being billed as a family film; fit for young and old. Really? A 6 year old is going to sit through Hugo and enjoy themselves more than Puss in Boots? Or Arthur Christmas? C'mon Hollywood. This movie is for a nostalgic crowd who wants to remember the days when they were young. The marketing is all wrong.

The Verdict:

Pass until the next Scorsese hit

Believe me, I know what you're thinking. "But it received a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes". I am well aware of this fact, and still defend my opinion. Although aspects of the film and story were terrific, it doesn't mean it was a good movie. I was extremely disappointed in the film. I took away very little, even taking into account I'm a movie lover. It's ok though; Scorsese will ride again. Hopefully his next film will live up to the bar he has raised so high.

Pretty crazy that The Avengers wont be out for about another year; yet here are two all new banners for the film. These are courtesy of /Film via Yahoo. These are pretty standard issue posters right next to each other, but they're still pretty cool. I especially like the poster of Mark Ruffalo above with a green hue to him. Marvel is going to milk this thing until and well after its release. Oh and one last thing... isn't Scarlett Johansson just ugly? ;o)

Julia Roberts' Mirror Mirror trailer, the OTHER Snow White movie

Just a few days ago the trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman premiered. I was very impressed with the retelling of the original Snow White story. I also mentioned that 'Huntsmen' was only one of three Snow White films being worked on. The second? Mirror Mirror, the Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Julia Roberts starring film. Check out the trailer below and my thoughts after.

Very different from the 'Huntsmen' trailer huh? I must say I liked it. The trailer obviously focuses on Julia Roberts' Evil Queen role. We barely see Lily Collins as Snow White, or her 7 dwarfs. It has a much more whimsical, humors tone to it than it's competitor. I understand these are two very different films, but it's nearly impossible not to compare them. And If I MUST compare them, I'd go for 'Huntsmen'. Mirror Mirror feels too much like a live-action version of the Disney animated classic. Which is ironic because there is a 3rd version about to start production from Disney themselves. So what do you think? Yay or nay on Mirror Mirror?

Snow White and the Huntsman trailer looks incredible

Snow White and the Huntsman is just one of three Snow White films soon to be released. This particular film promises to be something very different. Forget what you saw in the Disney animated version from your childhood. He comes the new, bad ass Snow White. My thoughts after the trailer. Enjoy.

That's what I'm talking about! I am normally not a big fan of remakes and reboots; but something like this is a total re-imagining of a classic. Charlize Theron (Monster) looks spectacular as the Evil Queen. I'm not the biggest fan of Kristen Stewart (Twilight), but she could be interesting in this one. And then there's Chris Hemsworth (Thor) playing the titular Huntsman. The special effects look top notch. The world that director Rupert Sanders has created is mesmerizing. We haven't even seen the 7 dwarfs yet. With terrific actors like Ian McShane, Toby Jones and Bob Hoskins playing dwarfs, you know it's going to be an interesting take on the classics.

Barring some total derailment, the studio's got my money for this movie. Anyone else?

Tower Heist review; a lot of fun at the movies

I've said it before and I'll say it again; don't judge a movie until you've seen it. I had an opportunity to see Tower Heist and I was pleasantly surprised. The movie stars Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and a slew of other great actors in an action comedy directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour). Again, don't judge a movie until you've seen it. No plot here, just opinions, so let's begin!

What I liked about the film:
The Cast

The cast of this movie is enough to make anybody laugh. But they're very well thought out and everyone contributes to the story. Ben Stiller is the ring leader trying to get back all the tower employee's pension funds, stolen by a resident (Alan Alda). He asks for help from his brother in-law (Casey Affleck), along with Michael Peña, Matthew Broderick and of course Eddie Murphy! The lead cast are the ones primarily planning the heist to steal back everyone's pension money, but the fun doesn't stop there.

The support cast is wonderful! Téa Leoni plays an FBI agent, Gabourey Sidibe and Judd Hirsch round out an amazing ensemble cast of past and present funny people. I was pleasantly surprised to find everyone had something to do; they weren't just there for the sake of being there. Peña gets the best lines in the entire film, with Murphy a close second. Murphy does what he does best, yell at the white characters, hustle to get by, etc. Some of it was typical, but still funny nonetheless.

Oh you, Alan Alda you! Alda is such a good actor. At the beginning of the movie, we really want to like him, we really do. But damned if he doesn't turn on a dime and make us want to hate him. That takes acting chops which he has. It was also a nice M.A.S.H. reunion with Judd Hirsh. Nicely done.

The Story

A big difference between this film and the 'Ocean's' films is the story. With Tower Heist, it's very basic. In the 'Ocean's' films, they show the prep for just about every aspect of the heist, they did not do that with this film. During the actual heist, we see things being done for the first time, nothing that was prepped earlier. It was kind of nice, it made us feel like it was all a surprise and kept us guessing as an audience. The stakes are high for all the characters, so it was easy to let go and believe these "ordinary" people would do this. I enjoyed it very much.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Coincidences
I understand when we go to the movie, we have to let our imaginations go a little bit. But there are too many absurd coincidences in the movie to overlook. Take for example the beginning of the heist. The entire plan is about to go bad, but BY CHANCE, they sneak in a side door with 6 employees who aren't looking. Just to get inside where 15-20 more employees aren't looking. No, that doesn't happen. Minor set back.

The Editing
A heist movie relies heavily on its editing. Like I mentioned earlier, they don't tell us too much about the plan until it has been set in motion. So the editing is crucial to the story. It felt unfinished. There were key scenes that should have been cut slower but in typical Ratner fashion, they were fast and frequent. Ratner has been doing this alongside his editors since Rush Hour. I can't say I was totally surprised.

The Score/Sound Mixing
It-was-terrible. The score by Christophe Beck was terrible. He wrote music featuring horns and acoustics that didn't belong in any of the scenes they were featured in. The sound mixing was so bad, I asked my wife and other people in the theater if it was just me or was it way off? They agreed, the mix was way off. I've watched movies all my life; I've seen movies where maybe a small part of the sound mix is off, but nothing like Tower Heist. These may be small, petty things, but I think it's important to note.

The Verdict:
Much Better Than I Would Have Ever Expected

I have to be honest and say I didn't expect much from this film. I went in with a negative mindset towards Ratner and his crappy movies of late. But I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the Stiller/Murphy dynamic and look forward to Murphy hosting next year's Oscars! The supporting cast was great, and important to key plot points. There were obviously some technical aspects of the movie I didn't like, but nothing worth crying about. Overall a satisfying movie that is worth checking out.

The Crow reboot loses it's director, who should take it over?

In April of this year, I posted about a reboot to the cult classic, The Crow. The original starred Brandon Lee, the son of the legendary, Bruce Lee. There were a few actors that were rumored to take over the lead role, but nothing confirmed. Bradley Cooper was the closest to starring in the reboot. But there was a director set in stone, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Not anymore.

Fresnadillo didn't give a specific reason why he was leaving, but there is one idea. He has been hired for a different reboot, Highlander. With The Crow reboot taking awhile to take off, I'm sure he figured moving on to the fast tracked Highlander was the way to go. So who should take it over? My two cents go towards Joe Carnahan.

Carnahan directed big budget movies like The A-Team and Smokin' Aces. But those are not examples of why he could handle The Crow. For that you'd have to go back to Narc. His 2002 police thriller. It was dark, and dirty and told a terrific story. THAT kind of director needs to retell this reboot. We'll have to see what happens.

The director of Monster, to take control of Thor 2

I really really enjoyed Thor this past Summer. It was a lot of fun and had a great blend of action and drama. It's almost obvious these days that every Superhero film is going to have a sequel at one point or another. Some are planned back to back (i.e. Thor), while others take a long time in between (i.e. Ghost Rider). Thor was a big hit and a sequel was scheduled for July of 2013, that is no longer the case.

The movie is being pushed back to November of 2013, and Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first film, will not be back. Instead, Patty Jenkins (Monster) will take over. This is an interesting choice considering Jenkins' limited experience. Monster is the only full length feature film she has directed. Granted she directed Charlize Theron to her first Oscar; but does that warrant a big-budget film? Well, I guess so. We all knew Branagh could handle the drama of the first film, but he far exceeded our expectations with the action. I'm thinking Jenkins could end up doing the same thing. Either way, I'll be there!

Real Steel review, a good movie with heart

Hollywood is going through an amazing transition right now. Studios are very eager to green light films with a built in audience. Movie properties with very little risk are making their way to theaters more so than risky art house pics. Real Steel is supposed to be a low-risk movie. It's based on a popular kid's game and short story. Who doesn't remember Rock'em Sock'em Robots? Well, these films are usually duds in my opinion and don't do much for me. Well, let me tell you, Real Steel was awesome! I'm excited to share what I think, so let's begin.

What I liked about the film:
Humans are the story

If you were to hear the synopsis to this film, you'd think there was little to no story, that is incorrect. Sure the film features fighting CG (computer generated) robots. But at the core of this film is a great father son story. Hugh Jackman leads the cast as Charlie. He's a former boxer who has moved on to fighting robots. Under extreme circumstances, his 11 year old son (whom he has no relationship with) has come to live with him for the Summer. Jackman's son is played by Dakota Goyo. The relationship starts out pretty cliche. They don't like each other and they get on each other's nerves, and it's only because they're so much alike. This part of the film, we've seen before. Jackman and Goyo have a lot of chemistry together and it really shined though.

The Robots

Holy wow the robots are awesome. You're probably exhausted of robot fighting these days. Give this movie a chance. Each robot character has its own personality, similar to WWE type characters. Director Shawn Levy does a good job balancing the action, and making sure it is there to compliment the story, not take it over. The CG is terrific, among the best I've seen in a long time. The main robot in the film is Atom, and is treated very carefully by Levy. He didn't want to make us feel too attached to the robot and lose sight of the father and the son; but you can't help but look at him as another main character worth rooting for. It didn't hurt that the fight sequences were choreographer by the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard. Nicely done.

The Score

The score by Danny Elfman is wonderful. I had the pleasure of seeing the film early with a packed theater, and there were several scenes where a lot of clapping was going on. Just as it was with The Fighter and Warrior, the music played an essential role in the success of the fight scenes.

The Director

I can't believe how much trash I was talking when I look back at my post announcing Levy the director. I criticized his hiring because of the films he's made in the past. The films in his past may very well be the reason he was the perfect hiring. The Night at The Museum films taught him how to use CGI to his advantage; films like Date Night, Just Married and Cheaper By The Dozen helped to focus on the human stories. The casting, score and editing were great in my opinion. All that is attributed to Levy's vision.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Length

The movie suffers in one regard, it's run time. There is perhaps one too many fights. The film follows the father son duo and their robot from obscurity to super stardom. Even with a montage to cut some of the less-important fights out of the film, it's still too many. One fight should have been cut and put into the "Director's Cut" of the DVD/Blu-Ray.

No Real Villain

This is a popcorn flick, and there's no real villain. I should explain. Olga Fonda plays a robot owner who is annoyed by Atom's success. She owns the undefeated, undisputed champion of all robots, Zeus (of course, right?). Like I said earlier, the director did a great job of making the movie more about the humans than the robots, so Zeus isn't really the villain. And Fonda is barely in the film, so she isn't either. I just wish there was a clear cut villain.

The Verdict:
A lot of fun, a lot of heart

I enjoyed this film very much. I really "bought" the relationship between Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo. It's not going to win either of them an Oscar, but it was believable despite the craziness going on. Each character helps the other grow in some way, and I love that. Jackman is forced to shape up or lose his son. And his son gets to feel what it's like to have a father after 11 years without one. There are a few great scenes between the two that are sprinkled throughout that really made me a fan. You'll notice I've barely talked about the boxing, because it's not what the entire movie is about. It's there and it's awesome. But any great movie, ANY great movie, had a great story to tell.

Ayelet Zurer replaces Julia Ormond as Superman’s mother in Man of Steel

I was very excited when Julia Ormond was cast as Superman's mother from Krypton. And with the film currently shooting, it's surprising news that she's dropped out of the film. It's too bad too! It would have been great to see her along Russell Crowe, playing Superman's biological parents. But we're going to be ok here. Ayelet Zurer has been signed on according to /slashfilm. American audiences know Zurer from the Ron Howard film, Angels & Demons, as well as the Steven Spielberg film, Munich. She's a wonderful Israeli actress with a lot to offer. Anyone disappointed in Ormond leaving the project? How about Zurer's casting?

Warrior review; an amazing film about family, forgiveness & picking yourself back up

Ever since the trailer debuted, I knew I wanted to see this movie. Warrior is directed by Gavin O'Connor. He directed another great sports film, Miracle. In this film, we get not one, not two, but three great performances by very gifted actors. Tom Hardy (Inception), plays Tommy Conlon, a Marine veteran. He has just returned from the Middle East and is finding it extremely difficult to live a normal life. Joel Edgerton (King Arthur) plays Brendan Conlon; a physics teacher and former UFC fighter trying to save his home from foreclosure. The men's father is played by Nick Nolte; a former alcoholic and terrible father to the boys when they were growing up. Now the brothers enter a Mixed Martial Arts tournament for redemption, and ironically, to bring their family back together.

What I liked about the film:
The Story

I don't normally explain plot in my reviews, but I have to divulge a little bit here. The story of the brothers is so good, so intriguing, we're drawn into the film. At a pivotal age, the brothers are separated due to extreme circumstances (I wont spoil why here). They each have resentment towards the other, and both resent their abusive, alcoholic father. But the story is not thrown in your face with flashing lights. We discover the pain the brothers have gone through in bits and pieces. All of which comes to light before the finale of the tournament, when the brothers fight each other. Don't worry, I didn't spoil anything the trailers didn't tell you already. I also liked how the MMA fighting takes a backseat to the hurt in their hearts. The best sports films focus on the person, not the sport.

The Acting

Tom Hardy attracted a lot of attention after Inception. In this film we see a different side of him. He's angry, bitter and relentless. But at the same time, he is reserved and in charge. He walks a fine line between controlled and crazy so well, we never know what he's going to do on screen. Joel Edgerton has to play a character with the weight of the world on his shoulders. A mortgage he can't afford, hospital bills, a sick daughter, an absent father and a failed UFC fighter. His character is the underdog, one that will never quit. Then there is Nick Nolte, who plays a man trying to get sober. He's been clean for almost 3 years and is trying his hardest to patch things up with his sons. The three men are riveting. I was floored by the three men's interactions. Compelling and entertaining, amazing.

The Action / Cinematography

The Mixed Martial Arts in the movie is nicely shot. There are some wide shots from the bleachers, as well as up-close, in your face action shots. The character development scenes are nicely shot. Cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi creates tension with a slightly bouncy camera shot that feels like it's someone eavesdropping on the conversation. Great stuff.

The Score
I've said it before and I'll say it again; score is so incredibly vital to a movie. As I've gotten older, I've developed an ear for the score in films. And one thing I noticed is, score can make or break a sports film. Mark Isham creates a wonderful soundtrack that evokes tremendous emotion. The highs are extremely high and the lows are extremely low. Nicely done.

The Climax

I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with an incredible brother. He has been my best friend since he was born. We've lived together as room mates until the day I was married. And with that being said, we had some great fights throughout our lives. But there's something about a brother's love that can't be explained. You can fight and hurt each other, only to make up five minutes later. The climax of the movie is the culmination of years of pain and suffering by both men. They both have pent up anger and frustration towards the other. They are both fighting to move on from a troubled past. They're both fighting for prize money that will solve their economic woes. The fight itself, along with the aforementioned cinematography and score create an unbelievable build up to the climax. I wont give anything away, but I will tell you this; my sold-out theater went from weeping for the characters to literally a standing ovation. It was so powerful, and so emotionally gripping, it will stay with me for a long long time.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Pacing

I understand pacing and editing are purposefully done (for the most part). But the first and second act (before the tournament) needed to be touched up a bit. There are character development moments essential to the build up; however, there are other scenes that needed to be re-cut and sped up. It is my opinion that these long, drawn out scenes could have been cut down and you wouldn't lose anything towards the overall story arc.

The Verdit:
An amazing metaphor on so many levels

Sports can be a great metaphor for the different struggles in our lives. The underdog vs. the front runner, picking yourself back up, feeling like we're up against the ropes, etc. Commentary on the wars in the Middle East, alcoholism, our country's current economic downturn, the housing market and drug use are all touched on in this two hour film. Give it up to great writers, a great director, terrific acting and a solid story. It's very VERY rare I see a movie twice in the theaters, but this will definitely be one of them. Now everyone call your brothers and tell them how much you love them. Then go see this film with them.

Everything Must Go DVD review; a great change of pace for Will Ferrell

I bet very few of readers ever heard of Everything Must Go, much less watched it. Luckily, I live in Southern California and watching an indie is a relatively easy thing to do. Everything Must Go stars Will Ferrell as an alcoholic who has just been fired from his long-time job. He comes home to see all his personal belongings on his front yard. His wife has left him, and he's forced to have a yard sale as he learns to get his life back together. With the help of a young friend, and a curious neighbor, he begins to do just that.

What I liked about the film:
A Change Of Pace For Will Ferrell

I'm a Will Ferrell fan, and I have been since his days on SNL. But I must admit, the last few years, we've seen Ferrell play the same character, just modified a bit. This was a nice change of pace. This isn't the first time he's tested his acting chops. In 2006, he was great in Stranger Than Fiction. He does a fine job here as well. The series of unfortunate events just come one after the other for this character, and we feel for him. He has proven he can act in a drama. It's only when Ferrell strays from the dramatic does he falter (I'll get into that later). Overall, a job well done.

Rebecca Hall

I had no idea Rebecca Hall was in the film until I started watching it. Mainly because I haven't seen much marketing for the film. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood. Especially after seeing her in The Town with Ben Affleck. She is a curious neighbor who has just moved across the street from Will Ferrell's character. Throughout the film, we learn why she is so sympathetic to Ferrell. She turns in another solid performance she should be proud of.

The Friendships

While picking up the pieces of his life, Ferrell befriends a little boy in the neighborhood, played by Christopher Jordan Wallace. Although I didn't think it was very convincing, I did appreciate the attempt. As Ferrell and Wallace work together to sell all his belongings, they learn a lot from each other. Wallace appears to be a future salesman, just like Ferrell. And Ferrell learns that life has a lot more to offer than what he thought it did. I also enjoyed the friendship formed between Ferrell and Hall. I should mention, Michael Peña and Laura Dern are not in the movie long, but definitely add to Ferrell's character arc. This was a neat little story written by Raymond Carver and Dan Rush (who also directed the film).

What I didn't like about the film:
The Absurd

It's only when Ferrell veers from the plausible that the movie doesn't work. There's a scene where Ferrell is visibly upset about being let go from his job. And what does he do? He slashes his former boss' tires. It looked like a scene right out of any Ferrell comedy; it would have been nice if the movie stayed grounded in reality the whole time.

Christopher Jordan Wallace

I feel bad even typing this, but the teenager was so poorly cast. I think I understand what Dan Rush was trying to do. Cast an unknown and that had chemistry with Ferrell so the scenes appear genuine and authentic. In my opinion it didn't work. I'm going to keep track of Wallace and see if he evolves. Let me know what you thought.

The Verdict:
A Good, Not Great Film

I think the movie is one worth seeing because it's a great little story about a man struggling to get his life together. I also enjoyed how he gets help from the most unlikely of places. It reminds me of great movies like Finding Forrester where an unusual duo learns from one another. Good stuff.

The Blu-Ray:
Slim

There really isn't much to brag about. According to Amazon, it's going to include only three special features: Behind the scenes featurette, Audio commentary with director, Will Ferrell featurette. Not a lot to choose from, but it's to be expected from an indie film. I didn't look at the DVD version, but I would imagine it has equal or less special features. My suggestion would be to go with the DVD. This is a character driven piece where picture and sound don't really matter. If you've seen the film, let me know what you think.

50/50 review, Oscar worthy tale about mortality and family

It's a tough thing to blend comedy and drama. A COMEDY that's too serious? Not good. Or a DRAMA that's too funny? Now you've lost the emotional weight of the film. So what to make of 50/50? Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a 27 year old man who has just been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. His best friend is Seth Rogen, who is the bumbling idiot with a lot of heart. He is seeing a therapist, played by Anna Kendrick, to help him cope with the news. Rounding out the cast is Dalls Bryce Howard as Godon-Levitt's girlfriend, and the legend, Anjelica Huston as his overly worried mother. Let's begin.

What I liked about the film:
The Story

Mortality is something I struggle with all the time. Whether I'm questioning religion, health, science, etc. The truth is, we're all going to die. Some of our loved ones are taken too soon, and some live out long and fulfilling lives. No matter the case, we can relate to the death of a loved one. The movie does a great job of showing how everyone involved in Gordon-Levitt's life, reacts to the news. Some take it well, some don't. Would you be the friend that cries about the ordeal? Or would you do what Seth Rogen's character does, and try to use it to your advantage to get girls? Different people deal with grief in different ways. The story was a touching one that comes down to mortality and family.

The Friendship

Sort of a sub-category to The Story. At first, I didn't think the friendship between Gordon-Levitt and Rogen was going to be believable. Seth Rogen plays the same sort of character we're used to seeing him in. But there was a lot of heart written into his character. The two friends genuinely care about each other, and they've been friends since early childhood. Towards the end of the film, we learn Rogen's character has been reading books to help him understand what his friend is going through. I thought that was a nice touch that the director could have ruined by making it too cheesy. Nicely done.

The Cast

Write this down... Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be snubbed of a worthy Oscar nomination this year! I'm not kidding. He turns in a heart warming performance that will leave you asking yourself, "have I done enough good with my time on this Earth"? He's been an amazing actor since he was a little boy, and he just keeps getting better. I know this role resembles many that Rogen has played, but I loved him. It was a well balanced performance.

Anna Kendrick as the therapist in the film is terrific. She's a rookie and Gordon-Levitt is only her third case. She means well, despite her lack of experience. She does a great job of showing us the human side of a profession so few know about. Dallas Bryce Howard is not in the movie for long, but she is does great as the evil girlfriend that chooses not to stick by her man's side while he battles cancer. Don't worry, I'm not giving anything away, it's explained very early on in the film. And the wonderful Anjelica Huston. Wow, I love this woman's acting. She worries about her only child, to the point she's smothering him. We see Goron-Levitt being pushed away from his mother because she's smothering him; but what he doesn't realize is, she needs him more than he thinks. What a great addition to this cast. Loved her. Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer play two older gentlemen also dealing with cancer. They ARE AMAZING! Their view on life was in great contrast to the young Gordon-Levitt, also dealing with cancer.

What I didn't like about the film:
The climax

I loved the film, don't get me wrong. But the climax needed some work. It comes very quickly and with very little notice. Once it arrives, we don't have time to catch our breath from the emotional ride. Once the climax is reached, it was like slamming a figurative brake on a roller coaster ride. Again, nothing to deter you from watching the film, but could have used a tune up.

The Verdict:
Brilliant

50/50 did something that so few movies have in the past. Balanced comedy and drama in a heart warming story we can all relate to. It's a poignant and comedic look at mortality; and how death can affect our loved ones. Jonathan Levine directed a movie that SHOULD be considered for Oscars later this year. I have my doubts that the Academy will take a risk on a film like this one, but they should. I hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets the recognition he deserves when this movie is released September 30th. I loved it, and hope you all get a chance to enjoy this film.

Crazy, Stupid, Love review... one of the best romantic-comedies ever

I hate it when people prematurely title something the "best ever". I am consciously aware that I am about to contradict the previous sentence with the next... Crazy, Stupid, Love may be the best romantic-comedy of all time! I'm not kidding. Brief summary: Steve Carell's marriage to Julianne Moore is ending (she cheated on him with Kevin Bacon). He gets some lessons on how to man-up by Ryan Gosling (who has the hots for the good-girl, Emma Stone). Got it? Good! Let's go.

What I liked about the film:
The Actors

Steve Carell is so unique, there is really no other actor to compare him to. There is a sense of sincerity in his face that you can't teach. His comedic timing is impeccable too. He starts the film as the nerd who we feel sorry for. By the end of the film, we're standing up and cheering for him to succeed. I don't want to give away anything, but Carell is able to transform right before our eyes, nice job.

Ryan Gosling is one funny guy! Gosling is a tremendous talent, he just keeps getting better and better. In Crazy, Stupid, Love he plays a womanizer who sets out to help Carell regain his confidence. With a swagger and charm to match his good looks, he plays the part with such wit, you can't help but love to hate to love him.

The supporting cast is great as well. Emma Stone as Gosling's love interest makes ANY man want to change their ways. Julianne Moore has a very difficult role. She could have easily been the villain in the film because she cheated on Carell, but we don't see her that way. We feel a little sorry for her because of what's going in behind the scenes. She's confused, a little neglected and under appreciated. Kevin Bacon is in the film, but for only a few scenes, he does great!

The Relationships

I have a few close friends I've grown up with that I still talk to on a weekly basis. I know what being a true friend is and how much hard work it takes. I felt the relationships in the movie were very well written and believable; especially the relationship between Carell and Gosling. The two play opposites that riff off each other so well. One is teaching the other and we're invited for the ride. The mutual respect is there and the comedy feels natural. It's a Yin Yang relationship.

Speaking of Yin Yang relationships, so too is the one between Gosling and Stone. She is the lawyer, good girl; and he is the bad boy womanizer. It was nice to see Gosling's character change over the course of the film. Then of course there's Carell and Moore. You know they love each other. You know they've been together a long time. But we also know things must change to make them stay together. Great stuff.

The Story

The movie featured a large cast, we were bound to see ourselves in at least one of the characters right?! Whether you are a male who is confident with women, or a female who is starving for attention, there's something in this movie for you. Never steering too far from reality is key to the success of the film. There are definitely exaggerated scenes, but "it could happen". I loved the story and the character arcs.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Coincidence
Marisa Tomei is in the film and plays one of Carell's post-marriage lovers. Don't worry, I'm not spoiling anything you haven't already seen in the trailer. Well, it turns out she is the 8th grade teacher to Carell and Moore's 13 year old son. Why? It doesn't add anything to the film except for the awkward moment at the parent-teacher meeting with Tomei. I hate when movies do that. I complained about it in my review for The Town; same thing happened. Small complaint, just a pet peeve really.

The Verdict:
Great stories lead to great movies... period

I sit back sometimes and wonder to myself, "Is it really that hard to make a good movie?". The answer is yes, but a good story always helps ;o) A good story, good actors and good direction can make for some beautiful art. By the end of the film, we care. I say it a lot on this blog, but I want to care about the characters. I want to care about what happens to them. Are they going to be OK? Is everything going to work out? And this movie succeeded in so many ways. As far as this movie, I'm in love. Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Horrible Bosses review... it's as good as you've heard

Jason Batmen, Jason Sudeikis and Kevin Spacey? Sold! Is there a story more relate-able than this? Sort of. How many of us have had a jerk for a boss? A lot of us I'm sure. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day are dealing with just that in Horrible Bosses. Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell respectively, play their bosses. Let's begin!

What I liked about the film:
The Cast

I kind of gave this away in the intro huh? The cast is terrific. Bateman is the "leader" of the crew plays a smart ass who has worked really hard to get ahead at work. But Spacey, who is as mean as ever, blocks Bateman's promotion. Jason Sudeikis is a loveable loser who is actually pretty good with the ladies. His boss is played by coke addict, sex crazed, Collin Farrell... who is terrific in this. It's nice to see him come back after a few bombs in Hollywood. Charlie Day plays the neurotic guy with a sexually abusive boss, played by Jennifer Aniston.

The tension between the guys and their bosses is great. You can imagine all the comedy that ensues with these three pairs. The really funny stuff happens when the trio sets out on their mission...

The Story

Simple, stupid and insane. That is pretty much the story. But in a good way. The three friends set out to kill each others. They're not tough enough to do it themselves, so they employ the help of a "consultant". Great stuff.

The Outcome

Totally a sub-point to "The Story", but I wanted to talk about it anyway. The story has a great ending that ties everything together. It does a nice job of wrapping up all the chaos so we don't leave the theater with any questions about "what happened"? Can't really elaborate without giving anything away, just watch the movie! We don't talk plot on this blog.

What I didn't like about the film:
Unnecessary Characters

Jamie Foxx plays the trio's murder consultant. While I am a fan of Jaime Foxx, his character didn't REALLY add anything to the story. There are funny instances between the guys and Foxx, but again, I think the movie does fine without him. And then there is the stunning Julie Bowen. She is of course Claire from TV's "Modern Family". It's too bad the director wasted her talent, she's barely in the movie! If the characters aren't going to add anything to the film, get rid of them. The character Bowen plays is vital to the story, but could have been one of those characters you never see, they're just referenced, and it would have been just as good.

The Verdict:
Loved It!

You know, sometimes I get criticized for being TOO critical. I don't think that's fair. I'm not a critic, I'm not a journalist, I just write about what movies I like and what movies I don't like. Sometimes it's a simple, fun movie like Horrible Bosses that can totally brighten my day. It was simple, had a wonderful cast, and had a lot of crazy comedy. There were a few little things I didn't enjoy, but for the most part, it was a great change of pace from the Summer of Superheros! Go see it and let me know what you think!

In Nolan I trust folks, but this has got me scratching my head. Christopher Nolan would never steer us wrong right? I remember when Anne Hathaway was cast as Catwoman in the third film of the Nolan directed trilogy, did-not-like-it! I still don't like the actress at all. And now this...

The first official photo of her as Catwoman has been released, and it's underwhelming to say the least. I'm trying to be unbiased and keep an open mind, but damn it it's hard. I don't like it. It's my blog, it's my opinion, I don't like it! Haha. The fact she's riding the Batpod is interesting. After all, Catwoman is a thief and would be the type to steal it from Batman. Then again, she could be assisting him, she's done that in the comics as well.

As far as the photo, I don't like the glasses/goggles, the blue LED lights or the simple black suit. Granted, we need to see moving pictures to get a better idea of what Nolan is going for, but I don't like it. It appears to be Trinity from The Matrix films. I can't believe the backlash online, I really thought I was going to be the only who didn't like it.... guess I'm not alone!

First official look at the new Superman... the Man of Steel

So this is it! The new Superman that will hopefully last longer than just one film! Above is the first official photo released of Henry Cavill as Superman in the upcoming Man of Steel. Just click the picture to see an close up of the suit.

I like it a lot. It is dark, gritty, kind of 'ugly' what's going on around our hero. Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan are doing a great job of casting and obviously designing. The "S" on the chest is different from past Superman suits. So too is the hair; a more slicked back look rather than the comb over. The suit has a webbed look to it that makes look a lot cooler in my opinion than spandex. The red is not so bright, making the hero appear meaner than usual. It also looks like the standard red underwear above the pants are gone. I'm loving this pic! How about you guys?

Laurence Fishburne cast as Perry White in Superman: Man of Steel

And the casting continues! Laurence Fishburne is a great actor who has turned in one great piece of work after another. He has just been cast in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, the Superman reboot. He will portray Perry White, the "chief" of The Daily Planet, the newspaper where Clark Kent works.

I am very happy with the casting so far for this movie. What do you think? Do you care that they changed the character from white to black? Me personally I don't care at all. There will always be decisions that make the fanboys mad; they're very hard to please. I look at it like it should be the best actor for the job. I doubt Fishburne will play the character like incarnations of the past (he's not the eccentric type). But I'm interested to see what he can do!

Captain America: The First Avenger review; it's a great superhero film

Captain America is one of the most beloved Marvel Superheros ever. It's kind of sad that it took this long to get his own movie considering what he represents. The character of Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is an interesting one. He is small, puny and wants nothing more than to be a soldier in the U.S. Military. When a doctor creates a serum to help him become physically superior soldier, that's when all the fun happens. Let's go!

What I liked about the movie:
The Cast

The cast, both starring and supporting, were very impressive in this movie. I didn't know how to feel about Chris Evans as Captain America. I always thought he was a good actor for genre films, but didn't know if he could command attention as a superhero. Rest assured, he's great! In the first act, pre-serum injections, his acting ability really comes through. The audience will feel sympathy for the kid from Brooklyn who wants nothing more than to serve his country. Evans shows us that Steve Rogers was a good MAN, way before he was a good superhero. Nicely Done!

The supporting cast was very awesome! Hugo Weaving as the main villain, Red Skull, was great. Even the cheesy accent was ok with me. Weaving has the voice, arrogance and presence needed to play the villain. I enjoyed his work very much. Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter was a delight on screen, not the usual damsel in distress. Tommy Lee Jones plays a perfect Colonel in the Military, he is compassionate enough for us to care about him, but stern enough to lead in a war. Stanley Tucci... is there anything Tucci can't do?! He's awesome as the Doctor who invents the serum for Steve Rogers. Sebastian Stan plays Bucky, Steve Rogers best friend, nicely done by the young actor.

The Setting

The movie mostly takes place during World War II. The production design team does such an amazing job with the set pieces, the costumes, etc. What's also impressive is the lighting, and camera work. Shelly Johnson used just the right lighting that gave the movie an older feel without overdoing it. It was nice to see a superhero film that wasn't in modern day times.

The Story / Writing

Simple, easy to follow and exciting. Hugo Weaving's character believes in "magic" which was stolen from Odin's vault. It is the Cosmic Cube which has been referenced in the Marvel Universe of films. It has a great deal of power and, if harnessed correctly, could destroy every major city in the world. Captain America and company must stop Red Skull from doing so. The writing is clever and I never rolled my eyes at any horrible dialogue. The writers were clever and even made fun of the Captain America suit before we could as an audience. I love when writers acknowledge things like that without making it obvious!

What I liked and didn't like about the film:
The Director

Joe Johnston has done a lot of work in Hollywood. He made a great name for himself with popular films like Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, October Sky and Jurassic Park III. I think he's a good storyteller, but there are aspects of his films that just don't click. His movies always look great, he can always get a terrific cast to work with him, and the stories are usually pretty enticing. I will tell you this, this movie is MUCH better than the atrocious The Wolfman from a few years ago. Most of the things I enjoyed in the film are because of him. As are the things I didn't enjoy.

What I didn't like about the film:
The Action

It's too bad, this is an action film and the action is silly. There are multiple action scenes with hundreds of henchmen at war with our Military. Henchmen and soldiers alike are being killed so often, we don't feel any real loss. I've said it before and I'll say it again, action should only compliment the story, not take it over. The final action sequence was impressive though with many intricate camera shots. Didn't totally leave a sour taste in my mouth.

The Score

I feel I pay very close attention to film scores. I can tell you which ones work and which ones don't in my opinion. The average movie going public probably doesn't even care, but I do! It didn't evoke emotion, it didn't make me care and I never felt like I was pulled into 100%. The score should have been big, uplifting even. This is Captain America damn it! He's viewed as the leader of The Avengers and the score should have matched.

The Verdict:
Liked it very much

I enjoyed the movie very much. I know I listed a few things I didn't like, but they weren't deal breakers. It was great to see a modern day superhero in the past. We grow with the character, figuratively and literally. Steve Rogers is a good man who just lacked the physical stature to do great things. He stood up for those who are bullied and did what was right. I can't wait for The Avengers next year, it will be another chance to see Captain America in action!

Rango DVD review

Rango was so far under my radar, I didn't post ANYTHING about it on this blog. I don't know why, but I really had no desire to see it. It made a lot of money in the theaters and received a lot of praise in the process. It received an impressive 88% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes.com. Well, I waited until the Blu-Ray came out and whoa... let's begin.

What I liked about the movie:
The Storytelling

Johnny Depp plays the loveable lizard in this animated western. Depp plays Rango, a lizard who loves to act. After a few twists of fate, and some clever acting, he ends up the Sheriff in a small town called Dirt. The western aspect of the film ensues. I don't want to talk plot, but the story is terrific. Rango and his new found friends take off for a grand adventure. What's beautiful are all the intricacies they built into the story. For instance: It's the desert, so naturally, the currency for the city of Dirt is water. Brilliant (sort of like The Book of Eli too, but don't tell anyone). Those kinds of details are what made Pixar the juggernaut it is today. There is so much adventure to be had, computer animation was the perfect medium for this story. Well done.

The Voice Actors

Depp is always awesome, but there are so many others in this film. Isla Fisher plays Rango's pal Beans. Also in the film: Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy and Timothy Olyphant just to name a few! What's great about this movie is the way the voices were recorded. The actors acted out their parts as if they were recording a live-action film. This gave the actors the real feel for their characters' movements and speech.

It's Smart!

I really wouldn't say this movie is for kids. There are a lot of smart jokes that small children may not understand. Granted the movie looks amazing, and that alone can keep a child occupied; but the jokes are so smart. I know it sounds funny referring to Rango as a person, but the animators made him so interesting. The dialogue is delivered beautifully by Depp. And, the animators play off of a lot of western films' cliches.

The Emotion

Maybe I'm getting a little soft in my old age, but I love the story of friendship. The movie plays out very nicely and gives the characters an arc. But what is great is the relationship between Rango and his friend Beans (Fisher). She's the smart and savvy girl to save his butt in trouble. I enjoyed the dynamic they created for them.

What I didn't like about the movie:
The Stupid Birds

I'm not a fan of mariachi bands, so that's probably a large part of why I didn't like these characters. They narrate the film through mariachi sing-song, and I didn't like it at all. In fact, I was fast forwarding towards the end of the movie, right past them. I know, I know I'm supposed to do that, but man they're annoying.

The Length
There are times when the movie is so slow. It comes in at 107 minutes, that's a lot for an animated film. ONLY A FEW TIMES, the movie had to fight to hold my attention, imagine a whiny kid at the theater, wow.

The Verdict:
It's too good not to buy!
The story is engaging, the animation is beautiful, the actors kill it, what more do you want! There's a moral to the story for the kids, and smart jokes for the adults. Plus, there is so much to see on screen, a second and third viewing will be essential.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo:
Tons of Goodies
There's an alternate ending, 10 deleted scenes, commentary, featurettes, a look at the real creatures in the movie, and and and. There are so many goodies on this Blu-Ray. I really enjoyed watching them all. There are also some games for the kids to play with. Overall, a great movie and an even better Blu-Ray offering. Bravo.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 review

I'm one of those late arrivals to the Harry Potter world. I never read any of J.K.Rowling books about the boy who lived. I didn't know anything about the wizarding world, or witches, or where Hogwarts was. I saw the first three films in the theaters, but skipped the rest. Now? Now, I love everything about the movies. A few months ago when Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 was released on DVD; I started a Harry Potter marathon from the beginning. I watched them all in order. Since then, I've watched all the DVDs, four times. That's 28 viewings of Harry Potter films all leading up to this. The epic conclusion to the most successful (critical and commercial) series in cinema history. Let me begin.

What I liked about the movie:
The Story

If this isn't obvious, I don't know what is. An orphan wizard, magic spells, and an unknown connection to an evil wizard named Volemort. The movie is easy to follow as a lot of the set up was done in earlier movies. This is a balls to the wall action epic. The final battle between Harry and the wizards against Voldemort and his army. You really must see the previous films to fully appreciate the conclusions in this film. The one thing that is important above all else... above all the explosions and magic and spells is simple... friendship. The story of three best friends and their journey to this epic conclusion is unmatched by any other film I've ever seen. THAT'S ultimately why these movies are so satisfying to so many people. I don't want to say too much more, if you were looking for a plot summary, this review is not the place.

Characters / Actors

As with any great story, there must be great characters. And for 10+ years, the world enjoyed these characters. Rowling has given the world so much. And what this film has been able to do is showcase them all.

I believe the supporting cast must be recognized. The marvelous Ralph Fiennes as the evil Lord Voldemort. Alan Rickman as the mysterious Snape. Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. Jason Isaacs and Tom Felton as Lucious and Draco Malfoy. Matthew Lewis as Neville Longbottom. And the lovely Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall. There are many more. Maybe they weren't showcased for long periods of time, but every hero, every villain and every wizard in between is included in the story.

Then there are the three main characters, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermoine (Emma Watson) who really shine. Their character development is key to the success of the film. They each go through a transition and grow as a character. It's amazing to think the producers have been able to keep all the same actors in tact for this epic series of films. The best scenes in the movie involve the three best friends. Like I've been saying all week... Harry, Ron and Hermione... I'll miss you.

The Score

The theme to Harry Potter was written back when the first film was released, by none other than John Williams. The same brilliant man that brought us the scores to Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman and so many more. Alexandre Desplat scored HP and TDH Part 1, so it is fitting that he has returned to score the finale. The score is beautiful. I actually purchased it yesterday and I am listening to it as I type this review.

The emotional weight of the score is vital to the story (you're going to read a lot about the emotional weight of the film in this review). The music alone tells the story. I was chatting with a friend about the film and told her I could discuss the score alone for hours. And I really could. The score was so impressive in relaying the emotion as well has elevating the action. It was was enough to put me on the edge of my seat, literally. And never forgetting the original theme created by Williams, it is weaved into this film as well. Bravo Mr. Desplat.

The Editing / Pacing / Tone

This is something that doesn't get a lot of recognition in Hollywood, but it is so important to a movie like this. If the editing and pacing is off, the entire movie crumbles. You know by now there is a lot of emotion and also action in the movie. How do you work those two together? The editing is key. Mark Day did an amazing job of keeping the film nice and neat. There is no deviating from the plan. For the most part, the film is told in chronological order, and there was a lot to cover. The tone was perfect as well. And I believe it is the marriage of cinematography, editing and score that sets the tone. Great all around!

The Director

Really, what the score, editing, pacing and tone all come down to is the work of David Yates. Yates has directed the last four Harry Potter films in the series. And there is a reason for that. He understood the material, he understood the world. The producers of the films understood Yates is a fantastic director. His work on this film proves you could have a huge Summer blockbuster, and still carry the emotional weight of a drama. It was perfectly balanced and Yates is the man to thank.

What I didn't like about the movie:
Length
Ironically, this is the shortest film in series. If only that wasn't the case. I understood Warner Brothers' motivation for splitting the two films in half. But in retrospect, I wouldn't have split the movies where Yates did. I would have included some of Part 1 in Part 2. Just my opinion. Maybe it's because I didn't want it to be over I was enjoying it so much!

The Verdict:
Amazing, what all Summer movies should be

We've come to expect explosions and special effects in our Summer movies. But what we are missing in most of those films is the emotional weight to make us care. I know I keep repeating myself, but this movie made us care. We felt invested in these characters and the final outcome of their stories. This all goes back to Rowling and her writing. Without her imagination, none of this comes true. Brilliant, simply brilliant.

While watching some of the special features, the producers refer to the films as a series, NOT a franchise. This is true; the movies are a series spanning 8 films to tell an overall story. It's not a franchise of unrelated events. So to see the 8th and final film combine so much was amazing. There are aspects and remnants of all the prior movies in this film.

It was difficult to say goodbye to all the amazing characters, but the beauty of cinema is this... great stories and great films stay with us, forever. Whether it's E.T. and Elliot's remarkable friendship, or Harry, Ron and Hermione causing trouble... we're reminded, through film, of what it was like to be a kid again. I sat next to a little boy at a sold out screening and was mesmerized by his reaction to the film. He laughed, he cried and he covered his eyes at times. But he was so engaged in the film, it was an awesome sight. Movies like Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 give me hope for the future of cinema.

Fans went nuts when the first official photo from The Dark Knight Rises was released. It showed a hunched over Tom Hardy as Bane, looking ripped and scary as hell. Yesterday the first official poster was released. As simple as it is, it has Batman fans excited as can be. I know I am. Sure it's simple, but it screams chaos. He shows destruction and mayhem without saying a word. It also appears to have a bat 'rising' up above the building. Very creative and aggressive marketing. I really like it.

The kicker is this... the first official trailer is going to be shown ahead of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 this weekend. It's official and it sounds like it's going to be awesome! As if I needed another reason to go watch Harry Potter this weekend?! Stay tuned for the official trailer which should be online next week. There's no point in posting the bootleg (which I refuse to see), it will just get taken down. What do you think of the poster?!
